Game Week (BSU) | Hawkeyes to Honor the 1958 Football Team

In 1958 Forest Evashevski coached the Iowa Hawkeye football team to a 8-1-1 season claiming the Big Ten Conference Championship and a Rose Bowl victory over California. Iowa was awarded the Grantland Rice Award which was given to the National Champion determined by the Football Writers Association of America.

The 1958 team was led by All-American, All-Big Ten, and Big Ten MVP quarterback Randy Duncan. Duncan, like Chuck Long and Brad Banks, finished second in the voting for the Heisman trophy. Duncan and star runningbacks Bob Jeter and Willie Fleming led a Hawkeye offense that averaged 405 yards a game, the nations highest average.

The 1958 team played nine regular season games and the Rose Bowl.
