Hawkeye Links | Friday Evening Edition

Let's get right to it.

The Heisman Pundit ranks his top 10 defensive ends for 2010. Adrian Clayborn makes the list, but not at the number 1 spot.

Every cornerback postition for the Detroit Lions is open writes one blogger. Spievey may just earn himself a starting defensive back position come opening day.

"In a lot of ways the Irish make the Hawkeyes look like a much inferior team." writes the Notre Dame Blog One Foot Down. Their article asks "Why Can't Notre Dame Win 10 Games?" They also go onto to say that Iowa would be favored against Notre Dame in 2010 even though the Irish are more talented at 80% of the positions on the field. {insert confused smiley face here}

Don't forget the Big Ten Network is replaying 2009 football games all day tomorrow. This week they have the Hawkeyes at Camp Randall versus the Badgers. The game starts at 3 pm cst. Might want to watch this one because next week is NW at Iowa. Yikes.

In basketball news,

Pierre Pierce is in the Euronews. Apparently his time playing in the Iowa Penal League helped raise his game. He is slated to play for the top level league in Greece
.
Today's Hawkeyesports "Mad moments" takes a look back at Iowa vs. UNLV, March 1988.

and finally, enjoy your weekend. I'm going to get acquinted with this pretty soon:

The Best of Cyclone Fanatic | July 23, 2010

David Sims, starting safety for the Cyclone football team, is being investigated for use of a stolen credit card. Certainly, as Hawk fans, we recall a certain star freshman wide receiver that ran into the same problem in Iowa City. The Hawks had the City Boyz Inc.

I'm not going to relish in legal problems that any ISU players may be facing. I just thought I would attempt to organize some of the ridiculous, absurd, and predictable reactions of the Cyclone fanbase. Sure, the Hawkeye message boards probably looked identical a couple years ago, but this blog wasn't around back then.

Hmm...Where to begin.

how about this, mt85 writes:
If this was Iowa City it wouldn't be investigated until after the season. The police department would be on vacation until 2011.
The Arhitect says:
If it was something involving credit card fraud that would make me feel much better about seeing him play in the ISU uniform vs. some kind of assault/violent crime/etc.
synaptic wave says:
This is where we find out if there are any real ISU fans out there. Who's going to step up and say they did it, take the blame and have a felony on their name so we can get Sims off the hook?
isufbcurt thinks:
Thats your opinion. I feel the coach has every right to contact the victim to get their story especially if the police are slow and/or uncooperative with questions from the coaching staff.
CloneIce has an opinion about OWI's
It (OWI) may have some significant punishment, but any crime that nearly everyone most normal people know has committed at least a couple times in life, is pretty minor in the grand scheme of things. Obviously it deserves a one-game suspension of course and that seems to be the standard punishment
Steve says there is bias in the court system!
It's hard to tell if it comes down to a trial. A guy could luck out and be walk away like Sam Mack or he could end up with a Hawk Fan judge like Berryman did. I'm not sure if I agree with the outcomes of either of these cases based on the information that was made public.
ribsnwhiskey is outraged!
Just like boy genius Adrian Clayborn. And Sam Aeillo. And all the other scholar-athletes that have gone through kirk's rogue program. At least ISU didn't postpone Berryman's trial until after the season. And ultimately did the right thing when he showed he couldn't keep himself out of trouble.
CyfaninChiland has a plan:
We better do a good cover up job on this. From what I'm hearing, it sounds like a squawk style coverup was in the makings. Only that the 'victim' wasn't nearly as interested in sweeping this under the rug, or as interested as our coaches were.
UNIGuy4Cy hopes a fan does the right thing:
So if this individual decides to drop the charges (if found guilty), is Sims still a member of the ISU football team? I wonder if she is an ISU fan?
There you have it, just a glimpse into the thread linked above. Check it out for more of the fun, or not.

Friday Morning Hawkeye Links | Plus Hawkeye Fan Meets Husker Fan

The Hawkeye coaching staff is keeping their workout warriors a secret. ESPN's Adam Rittenberg discusses Big Ten workout warriors on his blog today. Apparently Iowa chose not to submit players, upon hearing that Wisconsin said "do what Iowa does."

Mike Hlas, of the Cedar Rapids Gazette, decided after the Top Ten Games of the Ferentz Era series that we need to look at the Worst Iowa football games in Ferentz Era. Here are his first three submissions.

Who is Jason White? | Plus Hawkeye Links

Yesterday, I profiled Don Nordmann, a walk-on WR. Today, Jason White, a perfect fit for this Who is? series. Why, because many times on message boards last season people asked exactly that.

White, was a running back but has switched to the defensive back position, and then back to running back for the Hawks. Last season he wore the number 4 but this season is listed as number 14. On his Hawkeyesports bio he is listed as a 5'10' 210 pounds sophomore that joined the team as a walk-on.

White hails from Davenport Iowa where he attended Davenport North High School. He was twice named All-Conference in football where he played RB and LB. There is a complete, and impressive,  list of his High School athletic and academic accomplishments at gchsports.com.

You may have seen White around the ball on Iowa kickoff coverage, especially the Penn State game where White had three tackles. Statistically, White has been credited with five tackles in his short Hawkeye career. All of those have come on special teams.

White looked pretty good at the Hawkeye Spring open practice filling in at the RB position. Wegher, Hampton, Robinson, and O'Meara were held out of action. The Cedar Rapids Gazette's statistics for the Spring Game has White with 22 carries for 74 yards.

His role for the Hawkeyes is going to be a special teams contributor. In my opinion, he will have a career path similar to Paki O'Meara, but it's these kind of hard working walk-ons that make your team better. Perhaps, he may work his way onto the field as a back up safety one day.

Hawkeye Links,

The Des Moines Register reports that former Hawkeye TE Tony Moeaki signs with Chiefs. The deal is reportedly for 4 years and worth 2.47 million.

ESPN reports that Nebraska AD Tom Osbourne will be present in Chicago for the Big Ten preseason meetings this August.

The Big Ten Network reminds that on August 2nd  we should have our T.V.'s or DVR's set for Big Ten Media day. The BTN will be live from Chicago for four hours and then offer several rebroadcasts. ESPN News will also cover the event.

Andrew Logue of the Des Moines Register continues with his Ten Iowa Hawkeye storylines: No. 3, Kinnick karma. Logue notes that over the last 10 years Iowa is second to only Ohio State in at home winning percentage.

Maddux Sports rolls out another Hawkeye Preview. They have the Hawks at #11 and tell us the sure Hawkeye bet is to take the Hawks against Minnesota.

The Iowa City Press Citizen reports Abeberell Satterfield sentencing likely delayed.

If you are on Twitter and not yet following the official IowaHawkeyeFootball account now may be the time to do so. Today the Hawkeyes tweeted that the 3000th follower will receive an autographed photo of head coach Kirk Ferentz.

Who is Don Nordmann? | Plus Hawkeye Links

Or is it Dan? No, wait, it's Don. Over the next few weeks I plan to profile some of the lesser known Hawkeyes. The guys that the fans in the stands say "Who was that?" There are tons of stories about Ricky Stanzi or Adrian Clayborn; what about the Nordmanns? These guys are kinda like this blog, lesser known and potentially mediocre at best, therefor, we root extra hard for them.

Before we get to know a little more about Don we need to first give him a nickname. The Nord? How about Nordstrom? Maybe because he is always open. Wait, Nordstrom has store hours, so maybe that fits. The Nordstrom, open some of the time.

Nordstrom is a 6'6" 211 pound Senior Wide Receiver for the Iowa Hawkeyes. The walk-on wears the number 11. He had one catch last season for 35 yards. That catch came in the 35-3 blowout of Iowa State. He didn't see the field a whole lot, his player bio lists him as having seen action against ISU, Indiana, and the Orange Bowl.

His Hawkeye Sports bio also credits Don with a catch in 2008. That was a 10 yard reception against FIU. That brings his career total to two catches for 45 yards.

Don comes from Hopkinton, Iowa, which according to Wikipedia had a population of 681 in 2000. He attended Maquoketa Valley High School where he was named All-State his Senior season. What's not to like about a small town guy walking-on and seeing the field?

Need another reason to like the Nordmann? He likes to party. Or it looks that way. Not sure if this citation puts Don in the doghouse. His best shot at playing time may be the first game of the season. But then again, there is Ball State, and Iowa State, annnd Minnesota.

So, can the Senior be a contributor this fall? I think he certainly can. Last season the WR position at Iowa saw several injuries offering playing time five deep on the depth chart. Iowa had lost Chaney due to a knee injury, Sandeman had concussions, McNutt was sick and hurt his fingers, DJK was in the doghouse. Plus, the coaching staff likes to rotate in groups of WR's for different play packages. Without a proven second option behind Reisner at TE there could be a possibility of seeing more WR's on the field. Especially if they can block. Nordmann is a big body and may fit that mold.

Nordmann also was impressive at Iowa's open Spring practice. Those that were keeping stats had him leading the WR's for the day at five catches for 49 yards. Am I predicting Heisman for The Nordstrom? Of course not. But I do think he is capable of 5-10 catches for close to 100 yards this season. In a way too early look at the WR depth chart I think it is possible that Nordstrom could end up 5-6 on the list. An injury or two and he may crack the two deeps.

Now, on to Hawkeye Football Links

The Hawkeye Football team is rated #8 by Statesman.com. It's a quick preview as they run down their top 25.

SportsCaffeine.com asks if the 2010 Hawkeyes can be better than the 1985 Hawkeyes.  He does a quick position comparison and a final scorecard.

The Big Ten Network wants your online vote. They want to know Who's your top Big Ten running back? Although homerism wanted me to pick a Hawkeye I went with Clay. The 2009 Offensive Player of the Year, no brainer.

bball...
HawkeyeDrive.com has been covering the PTL and last night caught up with a few Iowa Basketball players. Today, the interviews were posted to YouTube and on their site. Here is a list of the postings:

Devyn Marble

Matt Gatens

Andrew Brommer

Scott Dochterman, of the Cedar Rapids Gazette, writes that Iowa players are surprised by Uthoff’s decision. Uthoff played with Cully Payne in the PTL and it sounds like the recruiting efforts of not only the Iowa staff failed to land him, so did the effort of the players.

So there I was, minding my own business (V:2)

By: THE NoLookPass (Special contributor to PSD.com)

cause that's how I roll. It's a Saturday in May, in the year of the Lord nineteen hundred and ninety eight, and my wife is 6 months pregnant. I'm 39, and I shouldn't have let her have that second wine cooler, if you catch my drift. My two older kids are 17 and 11 and when we told them they were getting a sibling, their joint reaction was "GROSS!"

Hey, Old Spice works in mysterious ways. So anyways I'm coaching a little league baseball team with this A type personality dude who has a schmuck for a kid. We are talking top level stuff on the phone and I'm sitting on my front porch, like which bench rider has the prettiest Mom so we can decide which one of these bottom feeders should play more than 3 innings in the upcoming game.

This car rolls by slowly and I see the kids in the car say something to my kid and his 2 friends. The car goes up to the corner and this baggy pants wearing, slacker looking, long haired 155 pound tough guy jumps out and starts stomping into my yard. My kid and his buddies go in the house and this kid introduces himself by saying, "hey why don't you have your son come out so I can kick his ass?"

I keep the other coach on the phone and look up and inform this miscreant that nobody is getting their ass kicked today, least not anyone I share DNA with. The other neighbors are in their yards, doing what real Americans do on Saturdays, like cutting their grass and remembering how much money they spent at The Fireside Grill the night prior. This pimple faced, gym class skipping, sideways hat wearing Jabroni starts talking louder and every one is looking over at us.

I forget I'm still on the phone and I'm explaining to this kid how he needs to leave before I play Haydens Hawkeyes to his Cyclone sorry azz and he's not getting it. My wife is leaning outside the screen door with her big belly telling the kid to leave. Apparently shes forgotten Ive knocked dudes bigger than this kid out by accident since I was around 14 years old.

There's a phenomena with young guys who think us older peeps were born at the age of 40. This kid in particular is needing a history lesson but I don't want to hit him. I recognize him as the product of a local broken home and one of Hawkness Monster's misguided youth. His Mom is 35 going on 16 and she generally dates dudes a few years older than her son. So I feel kinda sorry for this future parolee.

He keeps trying to walk around me and I'm tired of this BS, so like the Real American I am, I reach up and knock his hat off his head, just so he knows I'm done playing. He starts screaming "you hit me!!!"
And I calmly advise him he'd be asleep if that were the case. He runs down the street to his house and the next thing I know I've got a tweaked out crow bar carrying, life expectancy lowering, juvenile delinquent springing up the sidewalk at me.

I figure this has now gone too far. I know I can disarm him but I want to see how stupid he really is. I step into my house and leave the outside door open. if he comes in, I'm going to beat him like a red haired step child.

He's banging on my mailbox with the bar and his Mom is out there crying. I'm cooler than the other side of the pillow, waiting for him to come in. He finally leaves and a few minutes later two female Altoona cops show up.

Hey, I will finish this next week. HGTV is on so I hafta jet.

Tuesday Evening | Odds, Dark Horses, and Angerer

ESPN's Adam Rittenberg is taking a look at Fresh faces: Iowa where he profiles three new players to watch for each Big Ten team.

Earlier I linked a Jon Miller tweet with team odds for overall wins on the season(Iowa, OSU, Wisconsin). Phil Steele posted more today. On his blog he lists both team odds and major game lines courtesy of the Las Vegas Hilton.

SB Nation's Stampede Blog (Indianapolis Colts) says don't make Colts rookie linebacker Pat Angerer angry... you wouldn't like him when he's angry. Pretty cool write-up bout Pat, give it your three minutes.

Andrew Logue of the Des Moines Register updated his Ten Iowa Hawkeye storylines: No. 4, Suh comparisons. Logue lists Adrian Clayborn's career statistics and compares them with Suh's.

Wanna relive the 1985 Michigan State at Iowa game? You can here, complete with Brent Musberger.

Tuesday Morning Hawkeye Links | Hawks are #3!

At least according to one AP ballot. Mike DeArmond posted on campuscorner.com an early look at his preseason top 25.

ESPN.com's Adam Rittenberg believes expansion might not hurt at-large hopes. He thinks the league can still get two at-large bids into the BCS.

Five future Hawkeyes take the field as High School All-Stars this Saturday in the Iowa Shrine Bowl. FightforIowa details who, when, and where in today's blog post.

HawkeyeNation's Jon Miller tweets that the over/under of Hawkeye football wins in Las Vegas this fall is 8.5. He also notes that the over/unders for other Big Ten teams are: Michigan 7, Wisconsin 9, and OSU 10.

IowaHawkeyes.net tells us that Phil Steele lists some of our favorite Big Ten Coaches on the hot seat. Brewster, RichRod, and the Zooker make the list. Please no, don't let them go.

One Blogger lists Marvin McNutt in his list of College Football's Big-Gain WR's. McNutt finished 09 with a 19.8 yard per catch average.

Michigan recruiting blog reports that LB Ed Davis has made a decision but is still waiting to announce. The Hawks are in the mix along with both Big Ten Michigan schools.

Bleacher Report writer Bret Feddern says that Iowa's Depth at Wide Receiver Could Be an Advantage for the Hawkeyes in 2010.

In basketball news,

Jarrod Uthoff picked Wisconsin over Iowa last night. The Des Moines Register's Sean Keeler writes that the Wisconsin hoops program now has more of what Iowa doesn’t. Also from the Register, Rick Brown believes that Fran McCaffery needed this one. Hey, Rick Brown! He is cousins with a former Cyclone, a team that also happens to have a new coach and new expectations.

Jon Miller also chimes in on Uthoff.

It's Too Easy Cyclones

Earlier Black Hearts Gold Pants posted this awesome post:

awesome

then Hawkeyelounge.com made this thread:

awesome again

then, I made this crappy video

What if Jarrod Uthoff Commits to Iowa? (and other stuff)

I mean, who is the guy? Uthoff is a 6'8" 190 pound Senior to be at Cedar Rapids Jefferson, Iowa. He has offers from Iowa, ISU, Illinois, Wisconsin, UNI, Creighton, and others.

Update: He picked Wisconsin
Here are some videos from YouTube:

Uthoff averaged 21 points per game and 10 rebounds as a junior. He was also the class president and a 4.0 student. KCRG and the Gazette named him the 2010 player of the year for his area.

He is considered a combo forward and says his "versatility probably is the greatest asset to my game."

In other hoops news, Cedar Rapids Gazette writer Scott Dochterman, offers up some PTL highlights, impressions.

Football stuff,

A couple of stories from the Des Moines Register. First, they make available to fans a Ricky Stanzi photo gallery. Second, Andrew Logue continues with his Ten Iowa Hawkeye storylines: No. 5, Ryan Donahue.

Big Ten teams have announced their three representatives for this years media days. The three Hawks selected are Ricky Stanzi, Karl Klug, and Adrian Clayborn. Omitted from the list for Ohio State is Terrell Pryor....hmmm.

This morning I posted the BHGP podcast, this evening we have a podcast from Marc Morehouse and Scott Dochterman of the Cedar Rapids Gazette.

Marc Morehouse has more on the newest High School Senior to verbally commit to the Hawkeyes. He says Orloff likes the big stage Iowa offers.

Earlier it was reported by NBCSports that Colts' Bob Sanders may never be able to play again. Bob's agent has seen the report and says otherwise. According to the National Football Post Tom Condon, Bob Sanders' agent, says Sanders has no new health issues.

Steve Deace, of the morning sports show with Jon Miller, is making his yearly predictions. Like him or not, Deace knows (and loves) College Football. So, it's worth a few minutes to read, here are some of the stuff he predicts: Noel Devine will win the Heisman, Boise State will be undefeated, and you read the rest.

The fellows at BHGP challenge us to Desecrate Iowa State's Stadium and Jersey. Up for the challenge, members of HawkeyeLounge contribute. Yay! Internet!

Monday: Get the Week Started

Can the Spread Offense Have Long Term Success in the Big Ten? Rivaly Esq. says that six of the eleven teams in the Big Ten run some form of a spread offense. The article admits the spread has had success in the league but it hasn't changed the entire league. You still have pro formations like at Iowa. I think the spread in college football is successful because it gives you the ability to put the ball in your playmakers hands in space. Defensively, you have to account for the other teams playmakers and often adjust either the philosophy or match-ups. We've seen Norm Parker tinker with alignments over the years. He's stuck with the 4-3, went to a nickle, and gone with a 3-3-5. At the end of the day it comes down to defensive talent. If you can match-up on the outside edges and get pressure on the QB you can defend the spread in the Big Ten, or any conference.

Black Heart Gold Pants debuts their Season Preview podcast. It's a toss-up for the Big Ten Title, two picks for OSU and one for Wisconsin.

Penn State officials say there will be No White House In 2010. Ahh, looks like they are going to save it for 2011.

Cornnation.com believes the Huskers own the state of Iowa. They are looking for signs and found one in Okobji. I searched for a boat dock in Nebraska and couldn't find one.

Looking ahead to future opponents, Pre-Snap Read previews the Arizona Wildcats. The defense for the Cats is a rebuilding project. They will replace their defensive line and a couple of starters in the defensive backfield.

And finally,

From the KCRG archives, the video of Hayden Fry accepting the Rose Bowl bid in 1985.

Weekend Recap: Hawks add Linebacker Mike Orloff

Hawkeyes add another recruit? Looks that way. Mike Orloff, teammate of Marcus Grant at Lawrence Academy has pledged his verbal commitment to the Hawks. Marc Morehouse writes that  Orloff is a 6'2" 215 pound linebacker to be. Morehouse also linked this video:

Larry Station has entered the College Football Hall of Fame. The Des Moines Register reports that Station is the 14th Hawkeye player or coach to enter the Hall. He also says he still keeps up with the Hawkeyes.

Scott Dochterman of the Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that Cedar Rapids Jefferson’s Jarrod Uthoff to make college decision Monday. The Hawks are in the mix so we'll keep our eye on the Twitter for the news tomorrow.

It's true, the Let's Get Mad Again campaign is real. I have two billboard signs within a mile of my house confirming this. Something cool though. Hawkeyesports revisits some "Mad moments." This one is the 1992 March victory over Texas.

KCRG has a story up about Iowa City's Magic Bus Brings Up Permit Concerns. I've partied many a pre and post game at the former location for the Bus. The permit issue could have an effect on more traditions the fans love, like Big Ass Turkey Leg guy.

Marc Morehouse takes a look back at the Top Ten Games of the Ferentz Era. It was a nice series and like I said before, I especially enjoyed the game recaps pulled from the vault.

It is still too early to start making predictions, but I did say on Hawkeyelounge.com that I believe the post season All-Big Ten awards will include a handful of Hawkeyes. One guy I think will make the list is Riley Reiff. The Global Gazette says Hawks' Reiff lets his play do the talking.

The Sioux City Journal says there are Lofty projections for 2010 Hawkeyes. The dream scenario, according to the Journal, is a 2011 Iowa vs. Nebraska BCS title game.

That's all for now. It's been a long wedding planning, Catholic church test taking, O'hare airplane delaying, kid screaming day.
