GAMEDAY: #16 Iowa Hawkeyes at Indiana | Half Time

Iowa 6 Indiana 6

Stats:
Stanzi 10/17 104 YDS 1 INT
Coker 16 Rush 102 YDS
K Davis 3 RED 48 YDS

Let's look at the positives:

Who woulda thought Coker would have 100 yards at the half? Not me. The run game has been solid and should wear the Hoosiers down.

The defensive line has been getting to Chappell, just a millisecond too late. It's a positive to see the DLine continuing to get there. It can frustrating fighting that much and not getting the sack. That pressure will speed up Chappell and lead to incompletions and possibly INT's.

Keenan Davis has made an appearance today. He has a couple of nice grabs early and looks to be developing as another option.

Negatives:

Redzone breakdowns are keeping this game close. Stanzi hasn't looked sharp today. His early audible to the fade with man coverage was the right one but the throw was long and he needs to dial that in.

Meyer misses another FG.

The team still looks like they are asleep. There is still plenty of time to wake up and finish off the Hoosiers. A lot of us, myself included, expected 40 points out of Iowa today, but 20 seems more likely at this point.

The Hawks need to figure out the Hoosier zone, particularly in the redzone, and keep the pressure on Chappell.

Here's to a better second half. Go Hawks!

GAMEDAY: #16 Iowa Hawkeyes at Indiana | Plus Prediction Time

Good morning Hawkeye fans!!

If Coker or Rogers goes for 200 today they'll be reffered to as thickfreakness...

Iowa travels to take on the 4-4 Indiana Hoosiers in Bloomington. The Big Ten Network will carry the game at 11:00 am CST. Here is the ESPN scoreboard in case you can't get to a TV.

The Hawks are banged up. Marc Morehouse tweeted last night that at the walkthrough starting runningback Adam Robinson did not participate. I'm going to guess that Brad Rogers gets the start but it wouldn't surprise me if true freshman Marcus Coker gets the nod.

Update: RT @HawkeyeNation: Dolphin confirms Robinson will not play today.

Update 2: RT @stmillr: Julian Vandervelde is iffy (hip pointer). Could be a long day for the #Iowa run game

What does that mean? Well, there is now a possibility of turnovers. ARob never fumbled the ball, we have an unknown in that regard with these younger guys. There also may be a pass blocking issue. How well does Coker know the playbook? We may see fullback Morse lined up in the backfield. And let's not forget what ARob has brought to the table with his pass catching ability. ARob will be missed but I think the backups will split carries and provide enough of a running attack to open up the playaction.

Indiana has no running game what-so-ever. This could be two weeks in a row (NW is next) Iowa will face a team that wants to pass the ball all over the field with a senior quarterback. Indiana has only allowed seven sacks on the season and Chappell gets rid of the ball quickly. Iowa's back seven will need to recognize the routes quickly and force Chappell to check down giving the defensive line more time to disrupt his rhythm.

I think Iowa's running game will be just enough and if Iowa gets the passing game going could end the game with 150 yards total. Iowa's offense will ride Ricky Stanzi and I predict he will have his best statistical game of the season. Indiana may force a turnover or two today but it won't be enough to stop the Hawkeyes.

Score: Iowa 45 Indiana 17

MVP: The Manzi

It's Almost Hawkeye Wrestling Season | Media Day

Today was Media Day for Hawkeye Wrestling. Head coach Tom Brands met with the media and Hawk Central has the video here.

Hawk Central also has the complete transcript here.

Hawk Central says the #11 ranked Hawkeyes lack experience. They have video from both Aaron Janssen and Matt McDonough.

Hawk Central says that "Matt McDonough is the template for Iowa wrestling." The article 'Hawks look to McDonough' states: "McDonough also is the template for the Hawkeyes this season because, as a team, Iowa represents what McDonough was a year ago — young, largely unknown, unproven and not supposed to be a major factor in the NCAA title chase.

Both the Cedar Rapids Gazette and Hawk Central have photo galleries from today's event.

Game Week (IU) | ARob uncertain? Stanzi for Heisman? Todays Links

The biggest Hawkeye related news of the day comes from Women's bball. Hawk Central reports that Kiah Stokes commits to UConn.

Adam Robinson's status is still uncertain for Saturday's match-up with Indiana. Several media sources have commented on ARob today.

What about Ricky Stanzi for the Heisman trophy? He has crept into 7th on ESPN's Heisman poll. I've tought since Penn State that he was on track for an invite to New York. He may not win it but in my opinion deserves an invite.

That is if the season ended today.

Ricky did have two perfect opportunities to capture that Heisman moment with comebacks against Wisconsin and Arizona. The ball was in his hands but the Hawks did not prevail. Ricky does have four games left to find that moment and record one of the greatest statistical seasons for a Hawkeye quarterback in Iowa history.

Then there is this Cam Newton buisness...

The Twitter is going bananas with news that Auburn star quaterback and Heisman front runner Cam Newton is under investigation by the NCAA. Here are the links and tweets I've gathered so far:

RT @thebstiles: RT @slmandel: Auburn has confirmed that Newton IS eligible to play.

RT @TomFornelli: RT @CBSSportsNCAAF:RT @PeteThamelNYT: BREAKING NEWS: We have on-record confirmation the NCAA is investigating the recruitment of Cam Newton.

Game Week (IU) | Kirk Ferentz Call-in Show Notes

Here we go again, my AM antenna is pulling in Dolph and Kirk live from Carloooooos O'Kelly's. I'll mix in some tweets and have my own paraphrased words from the show here tonight, enjoy.

Dolph: Coker is a nice fallback option. See what Kirk has to say about Robinson.

Dolph: DJK still one catch away from the receptions record.

Dolph: Technically Indiana's last home game at Memorial Stadium, they do play one more "home game" at Fedex Field.

RT @bvak: Dolph: Ben Chappel leads Big Ten in passing.

RT @bvak: Dolph: Hoosiers 4-0 non-conf; 0-4 conf.  (They obviously focused too much on non-conf schedule.)

Dolph: Thoughts on James Morris: Never played MLB before this year. His grade point average separates him. In high school played a 5-2. Tarp hasn't stayed healthy and in comes James Morris against Penn State, didn't miss a beat. Had a big play against Michigan State on 3rd and inches last week. Those are the kind of plays wonderful players make in those situations. Dad is equipment manager of the Hawkeyes, he was born to be a Hawk. Podolak can't say enough about him, could be one of the best ever at Iowa. Wonderful combination, size, speed, played runningback in high school.

RT @Andy_Hamilton: Dolph just said James Morris committed to the Hawkeyes in 7th grade. James is turning into a big ol' fish story.

RT @bvak: Dolph: Norm's philosophy is to keep the play in front of you.  Quick slants won't work forever.  Won't argue with 37-6.

Dolph: Murray not playing because of Meyer. Murray got hurt, Meyer moved up the depth chart.

RT @marcmorehouse: Dolph, it's a hip flexor and it's still bothering him.

Dolph: Medical hardship waiver hardly unlikely for Tarp. He was running around today at practice, will graduate in December. Played too much this year and will play more.

Dolph: Kirks theory was to run the clock out (against MSU) and felt more comfortable with the starters in. Especially Stanzi to turn and hand the ball off. Monday morning QB will ask after guys get hurt why they were there.

KF: That was a lot of fun (MSU). Played well in all three phases, doesn't all come together very often.

KF: Hoping they are growing and improving (in special teams). Looked more complete than all season long. Coverage units looked more aggressive, once guys get experience it may be contagious.

KF: Fast starts good at home and on the road. Offense has been good all year long. A 5th year senior at QB has a lot to do with that.

Caller: Jim Rome something something, heard something happened, think it would be awesome to have a Hawkeye on there. I wish I was as good as a parent as you are a coach (wtf?)

KF: I've heard about him (Rome). Think it was 2002, respectfully declined to go on his show. Would be happy if players were invited but I'm not sitting by the phone waiting for that (interview) to come. Won't go into the whole story.

KF: Cotton and Vandenberg are making progress. Not much opportunity now but counting on them to work hard and step in next year. Both are behind excellent players.

Caller: What about that Tyler Sash? Do you practice those laterals

KF: (laughter) I think they practice those after the coaches leave the field. I didn't see it coming and either did Michigan State.

Dolph: Sash's 14th career pick and four behind Nile Kinnick. Has 392 yards of return yardage off of INT's. Most of all-time in Hawkeye history.

Caller: defensive switches from 4-3 to 3-4?

KF: Depends on what they are doing. Defense got creative years ago against Texas Tech in the Alamo Bowl. Something they've used throughout the years.

Caller: Why didn't you run it up against MSU for the polls?

KF: We do what we gotta do to win. In the 4th quarter it made sense to run the clock in the fourth quarter. We worry about winning, don't worry about the polls. Don't think margin of victory matters that much really.

Dolph: Why keep Stanzi and Robinson in there in the fourth quarter? What's the gameplan?

KF: Depends on the opponent and circumstances. Vandenberg had some medical things going on, developed before the game but he's fine. We get out backups in as liberally as anyone, we don't worry about stats or shutouts. We get them in when we feel it's safe and smart, want to get guys reps. Didn't feel early in the fourth against MSU was time yet.

Caller: comment on the O and D lines..

KF: Really played well last week. Defensive front really played well. Oline performed well both protecting Ricky and in the run game. Oline is growing each week, fun to watch develop since the first week.

Dolph: Linebackers have become your thinnest, how is Nielsen.

KF: He'll be fine. Bad news this week but he'll be back for his senior year. He worked hard and played well. Tarpinian is making progress. Hunter should be back.

KF: Morris, Dibona, Peterson all played well against MSU. Morris has worked hard. It's tough when guys are injured but it's nice to get guys experience. Tillison did a good job in the 3-4 and on special teams. Nice when you have some good stories like Morris, they need that.

RT @HawkeyeInsider: KF - Doesn't look like Nielsen is going to play for the rest of the year. Hunter has practiced the last two days.

RT @Andy_Hamilton: KF: Hunter is gaining ground and they expect him back. Tarp is making progress.

KF: Looking forward to watching Fran's team play and improve.

Caller: Have they changed the helmets(concussions)?

KF: I would like to think technology is improving. Can't remember a year where I've seen this many helmets fall off. Maybe players aren't wearing them the way they were designed. Huge issue in the NFL, any kind of a head injury makes you want to error on the side of caution.

Caller: Can you comment on ARob's rumored concussion?

KF: We are nicked up. Commented on Nielsen being out but think everyone else has a chance to go. Football is a tough game.

(Dance Spida, Dance)

Caller: Is the TE from Illinois going to redshirt?

KF: No, he's playing on special teams.

Dolph: Tarp have the option of medical RS?

KF: No, he's way past that option at this point.

Caller: Previous guy took my topic, what about stopping the quick slant? What about that play you call where Binns drops back and makes an interception?

KF: Binns is rare where he batted the ball and caught the quick slant, he does it in practice too. You have to choose what you want to give and take. A lot of variables in pass defense but what we do give up at times is by design. Haven't always done a good job but working hard to ensure the ones we do give up aren't bug plays that are going to kill us.

KF: Indiana is going to throw for their yards. Their run game is nicked up but they have a big group of WR's. Chappel is going to get his yards throwing the football.

KF: (Oline) They do have size, OLineman is back this week. Well over 300 pounds, big looking group.

Caller: What contributes to Stanzi's success?

KF: We've been more aggressive with our play calling. Ricky is a 5th year senior with a lot of experience. Nobody works harder. Tremendous dedication and work ethic. Really respected by the entire team. Great with people outside of the team too. Nice to see his efforts rewarded, hope he finishes on a strong note.

Caller: How hard is it for a young player to learn to play center?

KF: They trigger everything up front. A lot like MLB, have to communicate to the whole team. They come in all sizes and shapes.

Caller: How many sacks has the Oline given up? How about Adam Robinson, is he your most complete back?

KF: Stanzi wasn't sacked at all against MSU, once against Wisconsin. Robinson is running the ball well, does well in the passing game, and the blocking game is great. Ceratinly we saw that block last week against MSU.

Dolph: Stanzi has been sacked 12 times this year. 6 came at Arizona.

Tommy from Des Moines: Something, your boy is a Senior oh junior ohsawsrs who is the best of your boys at football?

KF: Can't wait to hear this?.?

Tommy: How often do you talk to Norm Parker during the week about the defense.

KF: I can defer the first question, I talk to Norm daily. Touch base, he's making progress. Hopeful he is back in IC this weekend and coming into the office regularly next week.

Dolph: Ferentz's boys mirror image each other.

Jim Zabel: I thought that first half was the most complete half I've ever seen.

KF: Thanks Z! I'll throw out Illinois 1985.

Dolph: Good luck Saturday at Indiana.

Big Ten's Top 10 Players

I was asked to participate in a round table with my friend Steve at From the Barn, a Minnesota Gopher blog.

Since I am not the most informed basketball fan I asked for help from a couple of friends. I've asked and hope they continue to offer their knowledge on the subject. Any-who, here is the first installment of Big Ten Roundtable: Who to fear from From the Barn.

The first question was: Which player is the most feared in the conference this season?

Contributor Chad Nims replied with:

I think Talor Battle is in the discussion but he doesn’t have adequate support from his teammates. Too often he is a one man show and teams don’t have to fear him as he can get his stats and the Nittany Lions can still be defeated. But with the news of Robbie Hummel’s season ending injury I am going with E’Twaun Moore. Moore is going to be asked to carry more of the load this season without Hummel and I think he is ready to make the jump from being an elite Big Ten player to an elite player on the national level.

Contributor AZmess also said:
I would say that Kalin Lucas from Michigan State fits the bill. The next tier of players would have Demetri McCamey of Illinois, Talor Battler of Penn St, E'Twaun Moore of Purdue, and Jon Leuer of Wisconisn. Hummel would have been in there too pre-injury.

Lucas is to me the clear cut best player in the league and will be playing on one of toughest teams in the league as well. He has the ability to get to the hole and finish ini traffic and from FT line to FT line he's about as fast as there is in the country.
Good stuff from both of them and also from the bloggers that contributed to From the Barn's roundtable. More to come as FtB continues with questions 2-6.
Should have more tonight after Kirk Ferentz's call-in show.

Now, football news and links:

So, what do we know? Well, Tyler Nielsen is out but his neck injury isn't career threatening. After that, not a whole lot. Will Tarpinian and Hunter may be able to play this week. Does Iowa move Tarp to the outside and ride the freshman Morris?

Indiana has little to no running game so coverage from the LB spot will be key for Iowa. As will play recognition, especially since Indiana runs the pistol.

What about runningback? Will it be a dose of Coker and Rogers this week against he Hoosiers? I suspect we may get some clues tonight to these questions from Ferentz during his call-in show but don't count on it. Ferentz is usually cryptic when it comes to questionable and probable injuries.

Game Week (IU) | Ferentz PC Notes Plus Hawkeye Links

It's Tuesday so that means Kirk Ferentz met with the media. The biggest news, Hawks lose OLB Tyler Nielsen for the year, or at least eight weeks, due to a neck injury. Jeff Tarpinian may be available for Indiana but the Hawks are pretty thin at linebacker.

Here is the transcript of KF's PC from the Cedar Rapids Gazette.

Before I get to links, I'll post the top Tweets from todays Hawkeye news wire:

RT @Hlas: Iowa's Ricky Stanzi leads the nation in TD-to-interceptions ratio (19-2) for all QBs averaging 15 or more passes per game.

RT @Hlas: Stanzi has passed for 6,295 career yards, rushed for 14.

RT @Andy_Hamilton: Iowa's offensive line allowed three sacks on three snaps at Arizona. The Hawkeyes have allowed three sacks in the five games since.

RT @HawkeyeInsider: CR Kennedy's Christian French down to #Iowa, #Oregon, #ND. Says Decision likely this week

RT @ESPN_BigTen: Lynch on Chappell (foot): "He’s a little banged up. We’re going to hold him out of practice today just to let him heal up a little bit. ...

RT @ESPN_BigTen: Dantonio: "Our entire team felt like it was an embarrassing performance last week. We’ll try to rectify that."

RT @ESPN_BigTen: Ferentz said Norm Parker didn't have any contact with players Saturday but joined team for pre-game meal the previous week.

RT @ESPN_BigTen: Ferentz on Indiana: "They had us on the ropes last year. It was pretty much a miracle play that saved us." Sash's pinball INT and TD

RT @ESPN_BigTen: Ferentz likens what Adam Robinson is doing to Fred Russell and Albert Young in previous years, backs that carried the load by themselves.

RT @HawkeyeNation: Hope to see a lot of us tomorrow at The Longest Yard in Valley Junction 6p HN radio hour. Best tenderloins in town. Can u there

RT @TheIowaHawkeyes: Ferentz: Tyler Nielsen will miss weeks with a neck injury.

RT @marcmorehouse: LB Dakota Getz has been out. Affects special teams.

RT @marcmorehouse: Norm won't travel. Five to 8 days before he comes back to IC. Won't be there Saturday.

RT @Andy_Hamilton: KF: Realistic chance for Hunter to practice today.

RT @HawkeyeInsider: #Iowa DB Jordan Bernstine still slowed by injury. Having difficulty getting back to full speed.

RT @HawkeyeInsider: Iowa LB Jeff Tarpinian making progress w/ neck stinger. Could take on bigger role this week.

RT @VoiceoftheHawks: Ferentz says Christian Kirksey is "gaining ground" and should have an expanded role this weekend.

RT @VoiceoftheHawks: We didn't see A-Rob after the game Sat. nor was he available today. Usually not a good sign.

RT @marcmorehouse: I asked DT Mike Daniels what his plan was out there: "Hit them in the mouth early and let them know it's going to be a long day."
