Hawkeye Basketball | Gabe Olaseni Signs With Iowa

Hawkeye basketball coach Fran McCaffery added another recruit to the fold today. Gabe Olaseni has signed his letter of intent to play for the Hawkeyes. Olaseni is a 6'10" 225 pound center that averaged 10 points and 8 boards at Sunrise Christian Academy in Kansas. According to the Cedar Rapids Gazette's Scott Dochterman, Olaseni is originally from London, England.

Olaseni is the second recruit to commit to Fran McCaffery this week. Combo guard Anthony Hubbard committed to the Hawks on Saturday. Olaseni and Hubbard join Josh Oglesby and Aaron White to form Fran McCaffery's first full recruiting class at Iowa. Per reports, all four should be in Iowa City to compete in this summer's Prime Time league.

With Cully Payne transferring to Loyola, Illinois, the Hawkeyes had three scholarships to fill this Spring. McCaffery said last week he'd be satisfied with filling two of those spots. McCaffery's staff has been recruiting Daytona deflect Percy Gibson and he has expressed interest. According to Rob Howe, of Hawkeye Insider, Iowa was still in the mix for Gibson (five days ago). It's not clear if Iowa is done with recruiting or if Gibson is still an option.

Olaseni has been reported to be somewhat of a project. He'll have Devon Archie and Andrew Brommer ahead of him on the depth chart. While Anthony Hubbard will be expected to compete for a starting spot and get points on the board for the Hawkeyes, Olaseni's strength may be on the defensive side of the ball while his offense is allowed to develop.
