According to Rivals, high school senior Adam Cox will walk-on to the Iowa football team. Cox played high school ball at Stillman Valley in Illinois. Cox rushed for over 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior. As a senior he totaled over 1500 yards and a whopping 36 touchdowns. A 200 yard three touchdown performance earned him Athlete of the Week honors.
Cox is listed on Berecruited.com 6'0" 205 pounds. In addition to playing running back at Stillman he also played linebacker. A quick YouTube search resulted in these highlight videos:
As a child of the late 80's and early 90's you can bet I had a room full of Topps, Fleer, and UpperDeck sports cards. In fact, my dad and I used to buy and sell them around the great state of Iowa. My dad even still dabbles in the sports card market. So, these first three cards are what my dad, if he were writing this, would pick as his favorites.
3. 1974 Topps Ed Podolak
2. 1959 Topps Alex Karras rookie card
1. 1955 Topps All-American #6 Nile(s) Kinnick.
Now, onto my favorites. I still have these today. I've moved four times since my childhood and lug around boxes of these worthless things. I dunno, I can't get myself to part with them. Besides, the garage has plenty of room for Air Jordan shoeboxes and 5000 count boxes of cardboard nostalgia.
6. 1990 (I think it is 1990) Pro Set Mark Vlassic
5. 1989 Pro Set Chuck Long - I know the Topps version with the fro is the more popular pick but the 89 Pro Set was full of so many rookies, Deion Sanders, Barry Sanders, Aikman.
4. Is this a 1988 or 87? Whatever, Topps Ronnie Harmon. I had his Startling Lineup figure at one point too.
3. 1993 Classic Draft Picks Danan Hughes
2. 1997 Scoreboard Rookies Sedrick Shaw
1. 1991 Stadium Club Nick Bell rookie card - My favorite card of all-time. I was a sucker for any card that had the Hawkeye uniform and not that blurted out stuff that Fleer used to produce.
Who are they? Guthrie and Mullings are one and two on the Hawkeye football Spring depth chart at the punter position. The Hawkeyes lost Ryan Donahue, an NFL bound punter, to graduation. Which will win the battle to replace Donahue's career 41.9 yard per punt average?
Number one on the depth chart is senior Eric Guthrie. Guthrie, a Nevada, Iowa native, will certainly stand out on the field. He is an unusual, for a punter, 6'6" 245 pounds. Guthrie has one career punt for 32 yards. That came in 2010 against Iowa State in a 35-7 rout.
Ferentz was asked about Guthrie at the Spring press conference, he had this to say:
"If you would have told me he was a candidate four years ago, I would have told you he’s a nice young man, extremely intelligent, I think he’s a presidential candidate, but candidate for this job, I probably would have said probably not. That’s the neat thing about college football. Last year he really did a good job. I think he’ll do a real nice job. He’s extremely conscientious. Kind of like Casey Kreiter, not quite the same age. He worked on it, and when he got called on at Minnesota, he did a great job."
Battling Guthrie is redshirt freshman Jonny Mullings. The Aussie born YouTube sensation enrolled at Ottumwa High School in Iowa before joining the Hawkeyes. He was part of the 2010 recruiting class as a grayshirt. Rivals recruiting service listed Mullings as a two-star recruit.
Like Guthrie, Mullings is a big guy. Big for a punter. He stands 6'4", 200 pounds. Hopeully the staff gets them both some snaps under center. Then maybe we can see at least one punt formation audible to a sneak in a very short yardage situation. I think a 6'6" Guthrie can fall ahead for one yard. Maybe even add a rugby style punt. No, nevermind. I'm a purist and hate that.
According to Hawkeye Report, the Hawkeyes have a new addition to the football team. Gavin Smith, from Iowa City, played two years of Junior College football at Iowa City Community College and will walk-on this summer to the Hawkeye football team.
Smith is a graduate of Iowa City West. At ICCC he played defensive back and had four interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown his sophomore season. He also recorded 32 tackles and had one punt/kickoff return. His ICCC profile also credits Smith with two INT's in five games played his freshman season. Smith was named second team All-Conference for his performance as a sophomore.
Smith stands 5'10" and 175 pounds. He has this highlight tape available via YouTube:
With the departure of fullback Brett Morse Iowa has a serious hole to fill at the fullback spot. The heir apparent, redshirt sophomore Brad Rogers, will not be able to go this Spring. At his Spring PC Ferentz had this to say about Rogers:
"A carryover from this December, Brad Rogers, as you may recall, had to pull out back during the Insight Bowl preparation. He experienced some heart issues, cardiac issues down in Arizona. He’s still in the process of doing studies and tests, all that type of thing. So he will not be on the field at all this spring. As you might imagine, we’re proceeding cautiously there. He’s getting great attention, great care. We’ll not have him out there. We’ll see how that all pans out."
When Rogers took over the fullback spot for an injured Morse against Michigan in 2010 he proved his transition from running back to fullback was a success. He attacked as a blocker and gave the Hawkeyes another option as a ball carrier. He showed some hands against Michigan hauling in a pass and gaining 11 yards. The Hawks seemed set for the next three years. Let's hope this health issue is resolved and Rogers can again take the field. If not, what are the Hawkeye options at the fullback position?
Sophomore Jacob Reisen moved from linebacker to fullback in 2009. Reisen was a grayshirt commit to Iowa in 2008. He has seen the field just once thus far in his Hawkeye career. That in the 35-7 blowout of Iowa State in 2010. Despite not being listed on the Spring two-deeps Marc Morehouse believes Reisen is in the mix for the starting spot.
Cameron Olson is a walk-on from Radcliff, Iowa. At South Hamilton High School he was named to the Elite Team All-State team as a junior and senior. Couldn't find much else on Google except this police blotter from 2009.
Matt Meyers joined the team last season as a walk-on from Plainfield, Illinois. At North High School he was honorable mention All-State as a senior. Meyers received interests as a recruit from Wyoming and MAC schools. His High School coach, Tim Kane, had these remarks about Meyer, “He’s a fantastic leader for our defense, he’s a solid hitter, and he’s grown into a student of the game. It’s not just he’ll line up and smack you in the mouth. It’s he understand the game so well.”
Jonathan Gimm was a member of the 2008 recruiting class. Scout.com had Gimm as the #33 rated tight end and a three star recruit. The junior from Houston, Texas has seem action on special teams the last two seasons and some time at tight end, particularly on the goalline. Gimm has not recorded a catch at TE and there may be something to that. Gimm is listed on the Spring Roster as the number two fullback.
Scott Covert was a member of the 2009 recruiting class. The Lake Forest, Illinois native was rated a two star defensive lineman recruit according to Rivals. He choose Iowa over interest from Illinois and Indiana and an offer from Pitt. Covert, the son of former Chicago Bear Jimbo Covert, had yet to crack the two-deeps along the Dline.
So there's five names to follow Rogers, who is still listed at the number one fullback spot on the Spring two-deeps. The fullback position is very important to Iowa's offense success. Take a look at the last game they played and notice the kickout by Morse (or maybe just watch Coker crush some people ;)).
