Hawkeye Football | Wayback Machine | 1958 Notre Dame vs. Iowa

The year 1958. It was a magical Fall for the Iowa Hawkeyes. I have a program from the November 22nd match-up of a 6-1-1 Hawkeye team and the 5-3 Fighting Irish.

The Irish arrived to Iowa Stadium facing an Iowa team that was one week removed from its first loss of the season.

Forest Evashevski's Hawkeye team would go on to win the Big Ten Conference, Rose Bowl, and FWAA National Championship. The Hawkeyes would finish #2 in the AP and UPI Polls. Here is some more from YouTube about the 1958 Hawkeyes:

The Head Coach, Forest Evashevski, had the Hawkeyes an average of fourth in the U.S. Polls in 1956 and '57. His staff included: Jerry Burns, Bob Flora, Bill Happel, Jerry Hilgenberg, Archie Kodros, and Whitey Piro.

The team was led by Captain John Nocera, who had a full page spread in the program.

Quarterback Randy Duncan was named the Big Ten's MVP and also named to first team All-Big Ten and the 1958 All-American team.

Some other legendary Hawks on the 1958 squad include:Willie Fleming, Bob Jeter, William Lapham, Robert Prescott, Ray Jauch, and Curt Merz.

These Hawkeyes were too much for Notre Dame that day. Iowa went on to win 31-21 and clinch a berth to Pasadena to play the California in the Rose Bowl.

Hawkeye Football | Wayback Machine | 2009 Outback Bowl Iowa v. South Carolina

Today we are going all the way back to 2009. The Hawks struggled to start the 2008 season. There was a quarterback change after a disappointing second half against Pittsburgh. But, there also was the emergence of Shonn Greene.

The Hawkeyes rolled South Carolina in the Outback Bowl. It was our last chance to see Shonn Greene do his thing. Enjoy:

Hawkeye Football | Defensive Tackle Jaleel Johnson Commits to Iowa

We've been waiting for it and according to SpartanTailgate.com Jaleel Johnson has chosen Iowa. Per Spartan Tailgate, a pay site, Johnson will make his decision public later this evening. Johnson, a four star defensive tackle (Rivals), was down to Iowa and Michigan State for his college decision.

I've been following this closely all week after fellow Chicagoland player and Hawkeye commit Maurice Fleming tweeted that Iowa had a commit coming soon. For more on Fleming's tweets about Johnson and for videos of Jaleel in action see below:

Hawkeye Football | Will it be Iowa for Top DT Jaleel Johnson?
Hawkeye Football | Is Iowa on the Verge of Another Commit?
Hawkeye Football | More on Fleming's Tweets | Jaleel Johnson or David Smith?

******UPDATE*****  7/6/11 11:15 PM

Per Rivals' Blair Sanderson, Johnson has not yet made it official. Johnson is to announce tomorrow per this tweet:

24/7 Sports is a relatively new recruiting/team site network. In fact they are a start-up for the same guys that started the Rivals network and then sold it to Yahoo!. Which recruiting site has the scoop? Well, since Johnson didn't go public tonight we'll assume it's Rivals. But if Johnson picks Iowa none of it will matter now will it?

***Another Update: 7/7/11 11:44am****

Rivals says it's official, whatever that means.

Hat Tip to @AdamJacobi and BHGP.

Hawkeye Football | Will it be Iowa for Top DT Jaleel Johnson?

If you have been following this mini-saga you, and I , probably thought we'd have a commit yesterday. For a recap, here are my earlier posts detailing Hawkeye commit Maurice Fleming's tweets:

Hawkeye Football | Is Iowa on the Verge of Another Commit?
Hawkeye Football | More on Fleming's Tweets | Jaleel Johnson or David Smith?

Now, since my last post there have been more tweets. Johnson was rumored to be deciding on Tuesday (yesterday).

There are two tweets in there. First, Fleming gives us the news that a top prospect is choosing Iowa. Second, Rivals recruiting guru, Blair Sanderson, confirms they are hearing Johnson is supposed to announce that same day.

So, what happened?

Fleming went to the Twitter again last night with this tweet:

Fleming was also asked if prospect, and close friend, David Smith has received an offer yet. His response to the Smith question was "nope." Rules out my guess that Smith would be the next commit and all signs point to Jaleel Johnson being the top prospect.

There have been rumors that Johnson will now decide on Thursday. Also that he will make his decision public on the Big Ten Network. I haven't seen anything to confirm either.

Michigan State fans think it is all Iowa fans stirring the pot. They haven't given up hope yet.

Looks like we'll have to wait and see. In the meantime, enjoy some of the many Johnson videos from YouTube:

My Gift to America II | USA is Still #1

Yes, I put together another lame YouTube photo/montage using my terrible attempts at photoshoping Hawkeye players into symbols of America (the Stanzi 'shops are the work of great legends, I can't take credit for those). But you know what? I did it because I can. 'Merica, Fuck Yeah!

In what appears to be a PSD tradition, I present you, The Next Hawkeye Patriot:

Happy Birthday O' great US of A.
