Former Hawkeye Basketball Player Greg Brunner Will Never Be a Globetrotter

It what can only be a win for the Washington Generals, former Hawkeye Greg Brunner shows why he'll never wear the red and white striped basketball shorts.

Also, rumor is that Mike Molstead is 6'2" so that makes Brunner at least 6'7" right?

Hawkeye Football | TWO WEEKS FROM TOMORROW PEOPLE!

H/T to :

Hawkeye Football | Who Is? Walk-On Kicker Marshall Koehn

The Hawkeyes have three kickers in fall camp, one of which is a new face to the program. Koehn is a 6'1 walk-on kicker from Solon, Iowa. At Solon, Marshall handled all the kicking duties and was 49/56 kicking extra points. He hit on 13/18 field goals with a career long of 48 yards. His role at Iowa will not be as a punter, he only averaged 37.8 yards a punt there. Where he may play a role on the 2011 Hawkeyes could be kickoffs. At Solon he put 45/82 kickoffs in the endzone for touchbacks.

Marc Morehouse, of the Cedar Rapids Gazette, was keeping track of the stats at Iowa's open practice last Saturday. Of the three kickers Morehouse says that Koehn may have the strongest leg. Koehn hit on 7/9 field goal attempts during the scrimmage session, missing only a 45 yard field goal and a 50 yard attempt.

Iowa's kicking situation, a lot like 2010, is still to be determined. Koehn will have a tough battle if he is to unseat current Hawkeye kicker, and also former walk-on, Mike Meyer. Meyer hit 14/17 field goals as a freshman, 31/33 extra points. The Hawkeyes also have junior Trent Mossbrucker who for a career is 13/15 in field goal attempts and 44/47 in extra points.

Hawkeye Football | Running Back Recruit Michael Malloy Arrested

Per Marc Morehouse, of the Cedar Rapids Gazette, 2012 Iowa Hawkeye football recruit Michael Malloy was arrested this past Monday. Malloy plead not guilty to four charges, one of which is a drug paraphernalia charge. He also faces obstruction of a peace officer, all misdemeanors.

According to Morehouse's post, Iowa can't discuss Malloy due to recruiting rules. Coaches can't discuss prospects until they have signed in February. Morehouse notes he'll update his post as news becomes available.

Malloy committed to Iowa this past July. He took an unofficial recruiting visit to campus and a verbal commitment soon followed. Malloy is a three star prospect on Rivals and chose Iowa over North and South Dakota. Of Iowa's eight current verbal commitments Malloy is the only prospect from the state of Iowa.

The Sioux City Journal has a very detailed story on Malloy's arrest. Here is the link.

Hawkeye Basketball | Hoops Prospect Pat Ingram to Decide Today

Hoops 2012 recruiting prospect Pat Ingram announced that he will be making his college decision today. Ingram tweeted:

That's 3:00 central time if you are in my neck of the woods.

Competing with Iowa for Ingram's services are Loyola of Chicago (say hi to Cully Payne) and Saint Louis. Ingram was reluctant to name a favorite and told Hawk Central's Pat Harty that "They’re pretty much all even.”

Ingram is a 6'3" 180 pound point guard prospect from Indianapolis, Indiana. Rivals rates Ingram as a three star prospect. Scout.com rates him two stars.

Here is a YouTube mixtape of Ingram in action, with horrible music of course:

****************UPDATED 8/17/2011 2:43 PM CST*******************

Ingram has verbally committed to Iowa. He joins Kyle Meyer and Mike Gesell as commits for Fran McCaffery's 2012 recruiting class.

Hawkeye Rumor Time | Is Freshman Defensive End John Raymon Leaving?

Rumor Alert!

According to TheMantheMyth on HawkeyeNation.com, freshman John Raymon had an interesting Facebook post last night. According to the HawkeyeNation thread Raymon posted: "Transfering to another school. Stuff fell apart! Don't no where I'm going yet!"

Raymon, who's Facebook page is public, responded to comments that he was "hacked" or that it wasn't "for real." Here is the post:

Raymon is a three star recruit according to Rivals. The 6'3" 245 pounder was thought by some to be able to compete his freshman season for playing time along the defensive line.

The Hawkeyes held their open practice session last Saturday and Raymon was present but not participating due to an undisclosed injury.

It is possible that someone got a handle of his Facebook password and this isn't really John posting. At this point it will be an interesting item to watch as the day unfolds.

**** Update 8/16/2011 11:25 AM****

It appears that Hawkeye Nation's Jon Miller has spoked to someone and says Raymon is not leaving school. The details are not very clear. You can follow along with this post on HN.

Hawkeye Football | Which True Frosh Have the Best Chance at PT | Redux

Back in April I took a look at Iowa's 2011 recruiting class and tried to guess which of those new guys have the best chance at seeing the field right away. Since that was written there's been some changes.

First, Rodney Coe never made it to campus. Coe will spend two years at Iowa Western Community College and then who knows? The plan is to come back to Iowa but two years is a long time. And then there were reports that he arrived pushing 270 pounds. You may see him as a defensive lineman at IWCC.

Second, Dan Heiar suffered serious injuries in an accident in which he was charged with a DUI. Heiar has three years to play two at Iowa and will redshirt this season to recover from his injuries. Ferentz mentioned Heiar will face disciplinary action when he can return to play. My guess that would be the first game in 2012?

And third, a new name was added to the class. Dean Tsopanides, a defensive lineman from Connecticut, was discovered at Milford Prep by coach O'Keefe. Tsopanides came to Iowa around 240ish and will be redshirting to add size to play defensive end.

Okay, so now that I've seen all of the freshman in action (at Iowa's Kid's Day/Open Practice), I'm ready to revise/redo/re-guess my freshman to see the field in 2011.

At running back, I originally guessed Coe and McCall would get touches. Now, I'm sticking with McCall. I believe he showed the crowd in Kinnick Saturday that he is ready to play. Hopefully he can break in gradually and learn the pass protection. He reminds me a little of Jewel Hampton his freshman year and it would be great to get Hampton 2008 like numbers out of McCall.

I'll take Jordan Canzeri as my second guess. I didn't see a ton of separation between Canzeri and Bullock but Canzeri has extremely quick feet. He reminds me of Wegher a little bit but with break away speed. The knock on JC would be his size, he took a shot from Terrance Pryor that you could hear in Cedar Rapids. He popped right up but I doubt his body is ready for many of those hits.

When I predicted the tight ends I sorta went out on a limb picking Krieger-Coble ahead of Hamilton. After Saturday I'm not afraid to admit that that was dumb. Don't get me wrong, HKC will be a good player. Hamilton is the real deal folks. I expect him to gradually work his way in and maybe play a bit of the H-back this year. He reminds me of a young Tony Moeaki but let's hope he doesn't suffer the same constant injury battle Moeaki seemed to have.

I predicted that all three of the frosh in the defensive backfield (Lomax, Law, Campbell) would see the field. Lomax was held out of Saturday's scrimmage and Law was running with the threes. Torrey Campbell was getting reps with the one and twos. He appears to be the leader for playing time among those three.

In the defensive backfield were a couple of walk-ons. Both Gavin Smith and Jamal Overton were getting plenty of reps during Iowa's scrimmage (granted it was with the three's). Smith is a JUCO walk-on so he has three years to play two at Iowa. It wouldn't surprise me to see him take the field over Overton, Lomax or Law, only because it may be in spot duty and it wouldn't make sense to burn a redshirt. If there was an injury and the role was long term, then maybe we see one of those three.

I've already mentioned defensive lineman Tsopanides and guessed he'll redshirt. Of the other three DL I'd guess that only Darian Cooper has a chance of playing. He looked quick and got right after it in scrimmage. There were whispers that John Raymon might sneak onto the field as a frosh but he was held out of Saturday's scrimmage so I couldn't get a good read on him. Riley McMinn certainly stands out at 6'7". He'll need a year to add some weight to his skinny (for 6'7") frame.

A position I didn't get a good read on Saturday was linebacker. Quinton Alston didn't practice due to an unspecified injury. Marcus Collins carries about zero body fat, maybe he and Collins see the field on special teams. As I mentioned before, there are five LB's in this class and it makes sense to stagger them. I still expect to see up to three of these guys get their feet wet on special teams.

In my previous post I didn't think that either Marcus Grant or Jacob Hillyer were going to play this year. After Saturday I'm ready to revise that. It's possible that one or both see the field. They both are big targets and looked smooth running routes. The question will be how fast they learn the playbook. After Iowa's top three WR's it gets really weird. You have Staggs and Shumpert. And then there is Cotton and a few walk-ons.

What's left? Jordan Walsh and Austin Blythe looked strong at Iowa's scrimmage. This may be the deepest Iowa's been at OL. These guys could compete right away for playing time if Iowa didn't have the excellent depth. If they redshirt they'll both be right there in the mix in 2012.

Jake Rudock. The kid is about 20 pounds from being the sure fire #2 QB on the roster. Along with the year in Doyle's weight training will come the arm strength needed for college football. I think this kid is going to be special, just not this year.

Hawkeye Football | Former Runningback Adam Robinson to Minnesota-Duluth?

According to some tweets, former Hawkeye runningback Adam Robinson has been seen around the Minnesota-Duluth campus.

The UMD Bulldogs began their camp this past Saturday but Robinson's name does not yet appear on the roster. It's unclear if he intends to play football there.

Minnesota-Duluth is the current defending NCAA division II champion. It would be an interesting spot for Robinson to land, they have only a handful of kids from Iowa on the roster. Because UMD is division II Robinson would be eligible to play this year.

It was a little over a year ago, at Iowa's 2010 media day, that this picture was taken.

A lot can change in a short amount of time.

Jewel Hampton (left) is currently playing for Southern Illinois. He participated in their first scrimmage Saturday and had nine carries for 31 yards.

Robinson's (center) future appears to be with UMD.

Wegher (right) is enrolled and playing football for Iowa Western Community College.

***************Quick Update: 8/15/11 12:00****************

Jesse Gavin has more tweets concerning Robinson. Sounds like ARob will attempt to join the football team at UMD, just not this year. Here are the tweets:

Hawkeye Football | Who Is? Defensive Lineman Louis Trinca-Pasat

Number 90 on the roster, Louis Trinca-Pasat, may be a lineman to watch for the 2011 season. I was impressed with his motor at Iowa's open practice and even though he isn't yet in Iowa's two-deeps I think he may earn his way onto the field for some reps against Tennessee Tech. I don't think the redshirt freshman is ready to unseat the starting front four but he'll get his feet wet in Iowa's cake walk opener and be a player to watch in 2012.

Trinca-Pasat was a member of the 2010 Hawkeye recruiting class. He, along with AJ Derby, enrolled at the beginning of the Spring semester and got an early start on his collegiate football career. He played his high school football at Lane Tech in Chicago, Illinois. There, he was a three star recruit according to Rivals. He had offers from Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Stanford, Michigan State and several Midwest MAC schools.

Trinca-Pasat arrived at Iowa weighing in at 235 pounds. He now is listed on Hawkeye Sports at 270. He may be maxed out at 270, with a 6'3" frame, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him add 10 more pounds. He showed versatility Saturday playing both tackle and end positions.

Marc Morehouse, of the Cedar Rapids Gazette, shot some video of the offensive and defensive line working at Saturday's open practice. Here we get to see Trinca-Pasat working with Carl Davis against Conor Bofelli, Jordan Walsh and Woody Orne.

In his one rep in this video he (#90) took on the true freshman Walsh (#65) and did a good job of getting up field and shedding the blocker. I like that he is low in his stance and comes out of it low and gets leverage. You will see that there is some work yet to be done by the young DL. Trinca-Pasat, if he keeps working as hard as he did Saturday, will be a fun Hawkeye to watch over the next four years.

Hawkeye Football | Why I Am No Longer Worried About the Fullback Position

Well, I've been freaking out about the loss of Brad Rogers. He's not completely lost but he's still working his way back from a heart situation that has kept him out of action since the Insight.com Bowl. Rogers has been exercising, which is an improvement, but hasn't been cleared for full practice.

Behind Rogers is Jonathan Gimm, Jared Reisner and Matt Meyers. A handful of unknowns, switched position walk-on guys that will probably contribute at some point. How well will they perform? That remains to be seen.

So why am I not worried? Well, we got a glimpse of Iowa's offense without a fullback yesterday at the Open practice. Offensive coordinator Ken O'Keefe, despite the many criticisms from fans, does an excellent job of identifying his teams strengths and game planning accordingly.

The Hawkeyes have several options at the tight end position and the depth and talent there will more than make up for the lack of a true Brett Morse type fullback. Sure, there will be times Iowa goes big (inside the five) and lines up a fullback to run out of the "I" but I think for the most part we'll see the H-back play a predominant role this season.

And why is that a good thing? Well, you have a bigger blocker that works with the Oline getting a head start after using motion from the H-back or from down on the line. The tight end motion also helps set-up misdirection and is extremely useful in playaction.

The idea of Fiedorowicz rolling into the flat off of play action to the back is exciting. He creates a serious match-up problem for a defensive coordinator that wants to run a zone concept that calls for a tiny defensive back to sit in the flat (Cover 2/4). If the defense plays a man-to-man you'll still have an advantage with CJ on a linebacker. He's pushing 265 pounds these days.

(One back, Two WR, Two TE)

(TE Motion: Lead block right)

And I'm not selling Derby, Herman, or even the new guy Hamilton short here either. They're at 255 and 240 pounds. They also run well and have soft hands. The Hawks have capitalized on the recruiting trail off of the many former TE's in the NFL. The talent there is deep.

I still think we will see plenty of "I" and offset "I" formations. Just maybe not as much as we did when Morse paved the way for Coker against Missouri in the Insight.com Bowl.

I found a YouTube from last season's game in Michigan. That was the game where Morse was injured and Brad Rogers got his first start on offense. Luckily, mgovideo recorded and posted every offensive and defensive play. It's edited so the video only runs about 14 mins. I believe that this video is a great example of what we can expect to see from Iowa's offense, for the most part, this season. Give it a watch and tell me what you think.
