Game Week (ULM) | Iowa Vs. Louisiana-Monroe Game Day Primer

First, remember to wear green for Greenwood. Also, don't forget to show your support for former Hawkeye Kyle Spading. To do so visit www.kylespading.com.

If you aren't even a little worried about Iowa's match-up with Louisiana-Monroe maybe this link will change your mind. Black Heart Gold Pants, earlier this week, linked this piece by Malcom Gladwell.

Also from the BHGP, a couple of entertaining looks at ULM:

This week's kid captain is Taylor Durham. You can read all about Taylor on Hawkeyesports.com.

Iowa's honorary captain will be former Hawkeye Vernon Rollins. Again, you can read more about Vernon on Hawkeye Sports.

Hawkeye Drive's Brendan Stiles was at this morning's I-Club event. On HD he has a video of Ferentz talking to the folks at the breakfast.

Some random notes from Hawk Talk Wednesday night:

Nolan MacMillan is now practicing with the team. The time frame on Mac joining the lineup is unknown.
Brad Rogers also appears to be on his way back. A return for Rogers may still be weeks away.
BJ Lowery is also on track to get back, perhaps before Penn State.
Also, Ferentz says Damon Bullock might get more than the one carry he had against Pitt.

Hawkeye Football | Offensive Lineman Kyle Fuller Commits to Iowa

According to Scout.com, the Hawkeyes have added another verbal commit to their 2012 football recruiting class. Scout says Kyle Fuller, a 6'5" 265 pound offensive lineman from Wylie, Texas is the newest member of the Hawkeye family. Fuller is a three star recruit according to Rivals. Scout.com also lists Fuller as a three star prospect. According to Scout, Fuller held scholarship offers from Arizona, Houston, Iowa State, Kansas, Purdue, Virginia Tech, Texas Tech and others.

Fuller visited Iowa last week and was in Kinnick for Iowa's comeback against Pitt. A blurb from Rivals said Fuller was close to committing on his visit. It was only a few days later when he actually pulled the trigger and declared his intentions of becoming a Hawkeye.

I hoped to post some video but couldn't find one. There are some clips of the Wylie Pirates in a playoff game last year but you can hardly see who the lineman are and what-not.

    ****UPDATE 9/23/11 11:10 AM CST***************

Here is a link to BHGP where they have a screen shot from Rivals contributor Blair Sanderson. It appears that Fuller wants to commit to Iowa but the Hawks aren't quite ready to accept his verbal. Strange stuff but we are talking about college rrecruiting.

Hawkeye Fans! Former Hawkeye Kyle Spading Needs Our Help

This Saturday, Iowa fans are asked to wear green in support of former Hawkeye Brett Greenwood. For more information and link to the Facebook page you can visit my post from earlier this week.

There is another former Hawkeye that needs the Hawkeye community too. Kyle Spading suffered severe injuries, including a broken neck, in an automobile accident this past July. Kirk Ferentz, during his weekly call-in show Hawk Talk, was quick to remind fans that the Hawkeye family should also keep Spading in thier thoughts and prayers.

The Spading family established a website for people to make donations or learn more about Kyle's progress. The family will also host a benefit for Kyle on October 1st, 2011. That is the weekend the Hawkeye football team is on "bye." Here are more details about the benefit from KyleSpading.com:

Hawkeye Football | Rumor Time| Is Marcus Coker Injured?

Okay, this post comes with a warning. I believe the original source of this rumor is Des Moines 1700 The Champ's Marty Tirrell. I've searched the web and Twitter for another source but so far Tirrell is all I can find. So...Take this for what it's worth.

You may be wondering why I'm giving this the light of day, believe me I am too. The rumor is starting to show up around Hawkeye message boards so I thought I would post it as something to keep an eye on. If there are updates and if the Tirrell scoop is either confirmed or not confirmed elsewhere I will update this post.

Here are some message boards discussing the rumor:

Is Coker Nursing an Injury? - www.hawkeyeinsider.com (email registration required)
Marcus Coker is supposedly hurt www.hawkeyelounge.com

    *************UPDATE 9/22/2011 6:20 PM CST ********************

Per Marc Morehouse, on his On Iowa podcast, Coker did have a shoulder injury during Fall camp but it's getting closer to 100%. Morehouse noted that Coker played throughout the end of the game versus Pitt. Morehouse went on to add that he has heard the rumors thinks Coker is playing Saturday.

    PSD's Twitter Top 25 | A Look at the Key Match-Ups For Week 4

If you missed it, the latest PSD Twitter Top 25 is out. Now let us take a look at the key games for week number four in college football.

    9/23/2011 7:00 PM CST (ESPN)

    UCF at BYU
    Spread: BYU -3

Both teams continue to receive votes in the Twitter Top 25 despite BYU sitting on a 1-2 record and UCF recently losing to Florida International. The Cougars continue their tough schedule, they've already faced Ole Miss on the road, played at #19 Texas, and hosted rival Utah. Utah handed BYU a 54-10 beat down last week and is sitting right outside the Top 25. UCF impressed voters with their demolition of Boston College in week two. They then fell to surprising Florida International last week in an in-state battle. Both teams will look to get on the right side of the win column this Friday night.

9/24/2011 11:00 AM CST (Big Ten Network)

San Diego State at #21 Michigan
    Spread: Michigan -8

In a battle of 3-0 teams Michigan coach Brady Hoke's former school, San Diego State, visits the Big House to take on the Wolverines. Michigan is looking to climb the rankings and declare themselves back on the college football landscape. San Diego State will know the Michigan playbook well and try to score a road upset.

    9/24/2011 11:00 AM CST

North Carolina at #25 Georgia Tech
    Spread: G Tech -6.5

Here is another battle of 3-0 teams. Georgia Tech has been piling up the offensive stats and crawled their way into the Top 25. North Carolina hasn't played the toughest schedule to date but has wins over Rutgers and Virginia. Georgia Tech can secure their placement in the Top 25 with a win, North Carolina may take their place if they knock off the Yellow Jackets on the road.

    9/24/2011 2:30 PM CST

#12 Florida State at #20 Clemson
    Spread: FSU -3

Florida State has a tough turn around after the physical match-up last Saturday night against #1 Oklahoma. The Seminoles are bruised and battered and are facing a Clemson team that just ended Auburn's 17 game winning streak. Clemson enters the Top 25 for the first time this season and will look to continue to climb with a win over #12 Florida State. The Seminoles want the college football world to know they are back and will have to rebound on the road.

9/24/2011 2:30 PM CST (CBS Sports)

    #13 Arkansas at #2 Alabama
    Spread: Alabama -11.5

Alabama hasn't had the test that #1 Oklahoma and #3 LSU has this early season. The Crimson Tide will host Arkansas in their first ranked battle of the year. Arkansas is 3-0 after taking down a few cupcakes and hit the road for the first time this season. The Razorbacks will begin a tough three game stretch in which they'll face Alabama, Texas A&M and Auburn. Alabama hosts Arkansas and then travels to the Swamp to face the Gators next week. This early conference game will tell us if Alabama is a National Champion contender. We'll also find out if Arkansas is worthy of their #13 ranking.

    9/24/2011 2:30 PM CST

    Kansas State at Miami
    Spread: Miami -13

This is a battle of unranked teams that are are receiving votes on some ballots. With the constant shuffle of the teams ranked 20-25 each week the winner here might find themselves in next week's poll. K-State is 2-0 and heading to play a Miami team that just defeated Ohio State. It could be a trap game for the Hurricanes and K-State will hope to pounce all over Miami.

    9/24/2011 2:30 PM CST (ABC)

    #7 Oklahoma State at #8 Texas A&M
    Spread: A&M -3.5

Another week, another match-up of Top 10 teams. The Big 12 has three teams currently ranked in the Top 10. This conference battle will surely cut that number to two as somebody has to lose. Oklahoma State has looked impressive thus far, scoring 157 points in their first three games. Texas A&M is 2-0 after two warm-up games against SMU and Idaho. OSU played their first road game of the season last week in a rain delayed trip to Tulsa. A&M has yet to leave the confines of home and won't play outside of the state of Texas until a trip to Iowa State on October 22nd. Vegas likes the home team, expect an offensive shootout.

    9/24/2011 6:00 PM CST

    Vanderbilt at #10 South Carolina
    Spread: S Carolina -16

Vanderbilt has been a surprise this season getting out to an early 3-0 start. They are coming off of a 30-7 stomping of Ole Miss. This will be the first road game for Vandy as they head to #10 South Carolina. The Gamecocks have eeked out wins the last two weeks over Navy and Georgia. Vegas likes South Carolina big here but don't be surprised to see another close game determined in the fourth quarter.

    9/24/2011 7:00 PM CST

#3 LSU at #16 West Virginia
    Spread: LSU - 5.5

This will be the third of four games against a ranked team for LSU. The arguably best defense in the nation will hit the road to face #16 West Virginia. The Mountaineers thought they soon would be conference foes with the Tigers but the ever changing conference realignment rumors currently have them denied by the SEC. West Virginia has been the highest rated Big East team since the first preseason poll. They'll have to find a way to score which might not be a problem for a team that's averaging 42 points a game.

    9/24/2011 7:00 PM (FX)

    Missouri at #1 Oklahoma
    Spread: Oklahoma -21.5

The Sooners return home to open Big 12 conference play against Missouri. After a physical game against #12 Florida State the Sooners will have to stay sharp to avenge an ugly loss to Missouri last year. The Tigers are hanging around the Top 25 in the "others receiving votes" section. A loss to Arizona State in week two knocked them out of the Top 25. The Sooners would like to knock them out for good.

    9/24/2011 9:14 PM CST (ESPN)

    #23 USC at Arizona State
    Spread: ASU -2.5

USC is ranked #23 and seem to be hanging around. After a week one win against Minnesota the Trojans defeated Utah and Syracuse. USC will leave home for the first time this year to head to Tempe to take on an ASU team that suffered their first loss last week to #22 Illinois. ASU wants to be in the mix for the Pac-12 Championship game and to do that they must first defeat the Trojans.

    9/24/2011 9:15 PM CST (ESPN2)

    #14 Oregon at Arizona
    Spread: Oregon -15.5

Arizona once received votes in the early season but have had perhaps the nation's toughest schedule. The Wildcats went on the road to face #7 Oklahoma State. They then had to face #4 Stanford and will host #14 Oregon Saturday. The Wildcats still have Nic Foles at quarterback so they still have a chance. Their defense will look to stop the fast paced Oregon offense that seems to be getting back on track after a loss to #3 LSU. Arizona has been outscored 74-24 the last two games so don't be surprised if Oregon runs away with this one.

Hawkeye Links | Bruce Davis, Vandenberg and PC Notes

Bruce Davis has decided to leave the Hawkeye football team. The fifth year senior missed most of last season with a torn ACL he suffered at Arizona. Davis cited personal reasons for his departure. The loss of Davis leaves the Hawkeyes thin at linebacker. Davis was listed as second string to James Morris at MLB. The Hawkeyes have also lost Shane Dibona and Dakota Getz for the season to injury.

The Hawkeyes have released their two-deeps for Louisiana Monroe. The two-deeps this season haven't necessarily reflected the team Iowa always puts on the field. There are some changes though, Hyde is now a corner, so is Bernstine.

James Vandenberg received national recognition for his performance last Saturday. Vandenberg was named the Big Ten's Player of the Week.

With all of the conference realignment talk there was some interesting research to emerge. The Hawkeyes are the fifteenth most popular team according to the New York Times. Fellow Big Ten members Ohio State and Michigan are both number one and two.

For more conference realignment stuff, ESPN.com's Big Ten blog has this recap of former Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese's radio interview. There is a lot of good stuff in here, check it out.

Marc Morehouse found a ULM message board and says the fans of the Warhawks are confident about this week's match-up with Iowa.

Re-tweets from today's Big Ten teleconference
      :
RT @jordangarretson: KF: Says preparation for Louisiana Monroe is "tricky." Doesn't remember a preparation quite like this defensively - very unique.

RT @Hlas: Ferentz: "When we came out of camp I wasn't sure what our receiver situation was outside of Marvin McNutt. ... a huge question mark for us."

RT @Hlas: Ferentz: ULM basically "runs two separate attacks out of two different personnel groups."

RT @jordangarretson: KF: "I think we looked at him [Vandenberg] like he was a starter last year." That said, hasn't played. Try to temper enthusiasm for him

RT @jordangarretson: KF comparing Vandenberg to former Iowa QB Matt Rodgers. "The good ones have a certain air about them."

RT @sbatt79 Ferentz: "Hopefully what we experienced late in Saturday's game will benefit our team in the long run."

Now, notes from the press conference:

I'm gonna have to use more retweets because the feed from Hawkeyesports was down.

RT @jordangarretson: KF on possibility of running no huddle, passing more: "we'll do whatever it takes."

RT @jordangarretson: KF: N MacMillan, Lowery will not play this wk. Both coming along.

RT @jordangarretson: KF: Tyler Nielsen is backup MLB right now.

RT @VoiceoftheHawks: Alvis moved outside because wanted to get him settled in one position. Had been playing inside, out.

RT @VoiceoftheHawks: Defense two weeks ago looked like a bad junior high team.

And now the feed is up

There's no excuse for James Ferentz not to be able to snap (in the shotgun).

KF on Binns: Always considered a starter, felt we had five guys last year. Had a good camp, good player, great guy. We're really counting on him. He's a different build but that's our story.

KF on captains: It's not my choice, it's the leadership group. Those four have separated themselves.

KF on the comeback: Not sure if it was one play but scoring that first touchdown really helped. Looked like a college team in the fourth quarter covering kicks.

KF on ULM: Offensively they have two different styles of attack. They play a couple quarterbacks. Give you unusual things you aren't used to seeing. They play with three down lineman, three linebackers and five DB's. Analogy is sorta like a wishbone team, something we don't see normally.

KF on bye week: We have to improve and get the win this week. This is an important week, have to keep the foot on the gas. A lot of things to work on and clean up.

KF on Z Derby: We'll see how everyone practices this week. Every guy in the group, even guys that didn't have catches Saturday did a nice job of catching the ball in practice. Zach continues to improve, played the best Saturday so we stuck with him. We'll see how the week goes.

KF: If you can't block you can't play for us.

KF on Bullock: (question: are we going to see more of him) I think so, he'll be in, he'll definitely be in.

KF on Hyde: He's our first or second team FS. We'll see how things go. He came up with two picks so it's hard to, it's nice to have that flexibility.

KF: Punter's punting well but I don't want to jinx it.

KF on Spading and Greenwood: We definitely do (contact them). It keeps everything in perspective. Those are real life things that are really tough.

KF on Iowa's balanced attack and recruiting WR's: Well, we threw for 400 and had three guys almost over 100 yards. Julio Jones was pretty good at Alabama, good players figure it out. If we were an option team it'd be a different story but we try to get the ball to the best players. Everybody sells what they got.

KF on lack of WR's in NFL and selling point: It might be a factor, we've had guys play here that were pretty good.

KF on conference expansion: Only time I listen to the radio is on the ride to my house. I heard this morning talk radio talking about the ACC. When I get out the car I leave it. I'm glad we're in a good conference.

Hawkeye Football | Saturday vs. Louisiana Monroe Wear Green for Greenwood

There is a movement that spawned this Facebook page to encourage fans to wear Green on Saturday for support of Brett Greenwood. The page states:

"OK, Hawk fans -- Lets show our support for a great Hawkeye and his family who are going through a very tough time (see BACKGROUND below). Let's WEAR GREEN FOR GREENWOOD at the ULM game. Imagine how much it would mean to Brett and his family to see Kinnick in GREEN in his honor.

LET'S DO THIS! Please spread the word on your Facebook page, Twitter, e-mail, or by simple word of mouth. Please, from this Facebook page, "invite" o...thers to this event. We don't need the U of I to take the lead. Let's just do it ourselves.

BOTTOM LINE: if you are going to be in or around Kinnick this Saturday, WEAR GREEN! =)"

There are also t-shirts you can purchase that are green with the block numbers "30." Here is the link to that.

By all reports, Greenwood is still in a coma following an apparent heart attack during a workout at Pleasant Valley High School. He has responded to pinching and coughs but still needs our support. Wear green for Greenwood this Saturday when the Hawks take on ULM.

Hawkeye Football | Final Thoughts and Observations From Pitt

I've already tweeted most of these but I'll repeat them.

It was nice to see Jordan Bernstine in the middle of the first group of Hawkeyes leading the team out of the tunnel. The Hawkeyes need a spark and the senior looks like he's willing to be that. He's getting it done on the field too. Bernstine showed what he can do in run support taking the pitch man on the option and making a tackle for a loss. Ferentz spoke a lot last year of the 2010 team needing those special stories. While it's 2011 Bernstine certainly fits that mold.

Welcome back to corner Mr. Hyde. After two weeks of blown coverages Micah Hyde made the move back to corner and wow, did it help. Hyde sealed the game by baiting Sunseri into a throw his direction and he made a circus interception. I think Hyde and Prater, when playing their best, are the top corner combo in the Big Ten.

Hyde moving puts Tanner Miller in at free safety. Miller's progress was slowed by off season shoulder surgery but the sophomore will be a solid starter for Iowa the next three years. Miller got fooled on the play action and fell for Pittsburgh's end around pass but he'll learn and grow at the position. He'll benefit this year from the experienced corners and be a key in run support. Both Miller and Bernstine give Iowa hard hitting safeties and that will pay dividends against the run in the Big Ten.

I like the move of Dominic Alvis to end over Lebron Daniel. Alivs still has to work on keeping contain, especially when the read option is to his side, but he's a little quicker than Daniel and can get pressure from the outside.

With Alvis moving out, Nardo moved in. I like Nardo's bull rush but that's about all he has. He held his ground and has an endless motor. Rotating Nardo and Davis will help Iowa's interior run defense.

My initial thoughts on Anthony Hitchens, after the Tennessee Tech game, were that maybe he was still a year away. If I could I'd like to revise that thought to just a few weeks away. He looked like a confident player filling in for an injured Nielsen. The Hawks are looking good with Kirksey, Hitchens and Morris at linebacker the next three seasons.

Iowa's left guard is becoming a liability. Matt Tobin is a nice story but he is consistently getting beat by the defensive end twist and stunt. He steps down but doesn't seem to be quick enough to get back when the end crosses his face. Scherrf got some playing time Saturday but I'm not sold that he is the answer yet. Maybe getting Nolan MacMillan back will be the fix the Hawkeyes need.

On the other side Adam Gettis had a big ol whiff Saturday too. Zusevics didn't have his head in the game the first half and fellow senior Brad Herman was called for a false start two plays in a row. All three players are seniors and they have to step up and play like it. Especially against a BCS opponent like Pitt. I'm confident they will, we all have bad days.

On the other hand, I thought Broderick Binns really took the leadership role Saturday and played his best game of the season. The Hawkeyes needed a sack late in the game and he forced Sunseri to tuck the ball while Mike Daniels came and cleaned him up. It was time for a big time play and your two best DL stepped up when they had to.

Last week I talked about Kevote Martin-Manley and how I thought he'd develop over the course of this season. KMM didn't need that long, he grew up in a hurry. Martin-Manley used and abused the linebacker that tried to cover him man-to-man. He was the go to guy for Vandenberg in the game's two final drives.

Vandenberg went from Jake Christensen to Ricky Stanzi all in one game. He still misses passes high and his wide receivers bailed him out but he showed the confidence and poise of a true leader.

I think college football, more than most sports, is driven by emotion. This kind of win combined with that fourth quarter performance from guys like Vandenberg, Martin-Manely, Zach Derby and Micah Hyde can do wonders for the course of a season. If Iowa gets blown out at home there was the potential for a looooong season. They didn't. They made their own magic and the transition from Ricky Stanzi and Adrian Clayborn's Hawkeyes to James Vandenberg and Broderick Binns' Hawkeyes may be complete.
