Gimme That, Gimme That, Gimme That Touchdown Record

Congrats Marvin McNutt!

McNutt hauled in three touchdowns today against Indiana breaking the tie he had with Tim Dwight and Danan Hughes. McNutt now has 24 career receiving touchdowns at Iowa.

Hawkeye Basketball | Indiana's Will Sheehey Recreates Dunk Over Basabe

The Indiana Hoosiers held a dunk contest during their Midnight Madness last weekend. The winning dunk was Will Sheehey's reenactment of an in-game dunk he pulled off over Iowa's Melsahn Basabe last season. Rivals.com's Jeff Eisenberg writes "Tom Pritchard (was) playing Besabe while Moore held a poster of last year's dunk with "10.0" printed on it." Here is the dunk:

The Hoosiers would lose both games to Iowa last season. The game in which Sheehey pulled off his dunk Iowa won 64-63 in Bloomington. Our man Basabe put 20 points on the board and pulled down 13 rebounds. Sheehey had 12 points and one rebound. It was one of his three games last season he scored in double figures.

The game was also Iowa's first road win in the Big Ten in what seemed like forever. The Hawkeye celebration made it to YouTube.

PSD's Twitter Top 25 | A Look at the Key Match-Ups For Week 8

Again, if you missed this week's Twitter Top 25, here it is in all of its glory. Now, let's take a look at the biggest games of the weekend.

October 22, 2011 11:00 AM CST (ESPN)

North Carolina at #8 Clemson
Spread: Clemson -10.5

North Carolina was sneaking up the rankings but has since lost two of the last three games. The Tar Heels fell to once rated #12 Georgia Tech and last week to Miami. Clemson has been the one of the nation's hottest teams beginning the season in the "others receiving votes" section and now the #8 team in the country. Clemson should continue to roll but will have to do it without freshman linebacker Tony Steward. The Tigers still have Sammy Watkins though and he may be the most exciting player in the ACC.

October 22, 2011 2:30 PM CST (CBS)

#21 Auburn at #1 LSU
Spread: LSU -21

Auburn has bounced in-and-out of the rankings like a basketball. They are back in this week at #21, just in time to take on the nation's #1 team. LSU is a big favorite despite losing Tyrann Mathieu and Spencer Ware to suspension. Auburn will start their third quarterback of the season. The timing is rough as they head to the Bayou to face the nation's top defense.

October 22, 2011 2:30 PM CST (ESPN)

#20 Georgia Tech at Miami (Fl)
Spread: Miami -3

In the opening weeks of the season Georgia Tech was lighting the scoreboard and running up the offensive stats. They were the ACC's highest rated team until the rise of Clemson. Now the Yellow Jackets are in jeopardy of dropping from the Top 25 if they lose on the road in Miami. Vegas has the Hurricanes as a three point favorite at home. The Yellow Jackets will return home next week to host Clemson and the following week Virginia Tech.

October 22, 2011 7:00 PM CST (ESPN)

#4 Wisconsin at #12 Michigan State
Spread: Wisconsin -7.5

This could be a preview of the Big Ten Championship game in December. Wisconsin has rolled everyone on their schedule but they haven't faced a defense like Michigan State's. The Spartans are coming off a beat down of in-state rival Michigan while Wisconsin had a tune up at Indiana. Wisconsin's leading receiver Nick Toon has been dinged up and but the running game is their bread-and-butter. Russell Wilson has his name among the Heisman hopefuls and another big showing in prime time could push his name to the top of the list.

Other games of note (all games October 22, 2011):

11:00 AM CST (FX)

#6 Oklahoma State at Missouri
Spread: OSU -6.5

Okie State wants the keep the good times rolling. Mizzu can salvage a 3-3 season with a win over a Top 10 team.

6:30 PM CST (NBC)

USC at Notre Dame
Spread: ND -8.5

Both teams are hovering around the Top 25. One will stay and one will go.

7:00 PM CST (CBS Sports Network)

SMU at Southern Mississippi
Spread: S Miss -3

Both teams sit at 5-1 and outside the Top 25. Both are receiving votes and the winner could make their season debut in Week 8's poll.

7:00 PM CST (ABC Regional)

#24 Washington at #5 Stanford
Spead: Stanford -20

The Cardinal need wins over ranked teams to be relevant in the BCS. Washington hits the road and will need to pull off the upset to remain in the Top 25.

Former Hawkeye Brandon Wegher Charged With Public Intox

According to Scott Dochterman, of the Cedar Rapids Gazette, former Hawkeye Brandon Wegher was arrested. Wegher left Iowa just before the beginning of his sophomore season. He transferred to Oklahoma but never made it there. He then attempted to give football another try at Iowa Western Community College but failed to qualify. He still attends IWCC.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette's report states that Wegher was arrested and charged with eluding police and public intox. He was arrested yesterday after a warrant was issued for an incident that originally took place on October 13th. According to The Daily Nonpereil Wegher "fled when police arrived at a drinking party at an apartment at 2800 College Road."

Hawkeye Football | Great Moments in Position Change History

I thought I'd take a look at some of the Hawkeye football players that have changed positions at Iowa during the Ferentz era and have or have not had success at those new positions. This post is inspired by AJ Derby's move to linebacker.

Now, I'm not including guys that came to Iowa as a recruit and played a certain position in high school. There are plenty of Robert Gallery from tight end to tackle stories at Iowa. Nope, this is an attempt to recall position moves from the past that happened either in-season or during bowl prep.

Let's begin with some of the not-so-great moves or position switches that didn't work out:

Remember last season when Anthony Hitchens became a running back? Hitchens is currently an outside linebacker at Iowa and practiced as an OLB his freshman season. When Iowa was left thin at running back in 2010 Hitchens made the move to running back as an in case of emergency back. He never saw the field at RB and has since spent all of 2011 at OLB.

What about Cody Hundertmark? Cody saw playing time as a true freshman at Iowa on the defensive line. He then took his second year at Iowa as a redshirt season. In 2009 he again worked with the defensive line and was listed as second team defensive tackle. It was 2010 in Iowa's bowl prep for the Orange Bowl that Hundertmark made the move to offensive guard. Following spring ball Cody was listed as second team but left Iowa that following summer.

Damian Sims came to Iowa as a running back and finished his true freshman season with 17 carries for 45 yards. Sims would move to defensive back in 2005 and start the season opener against Ball State. The switch lasted all of one game at Iowa, he would quickly move back to running back and finish his career with 1504 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Shonn Greene blew up so many people on Iowa's kickoff team that he earned a brief stint as a safety. This was the same season he wowed fans as a freshman bowling his way over Ball State for 116 yards in the season opener. It was the Hawkeyes bowl prep where Shonn got a shot in the defensive backfield. That move didn't stick and Greene would eventually become the Doak Walker Award winner in 2008.

Eric McCollom was a big fan of Brad Banks. So much that the young quarterback from South Carolina came to Iowa to follow in Banks' footsteps. McCollom saw his first action against Arizona State his freshman season taking a snap from shotgun and gaining two yards. His true QB debut came his sophomore season replacing a dehydrated Drew Tate against Kent State. McCollom made the switch to full time receiver in 2005 and had just two catches for 19 yards. He would transfer from Iowa following spring practice in 2006.

How about some position switches that worked out, or may be working out:

Jason Manson was a reserve quarterback at Iowa for his entire career. It was the last few games of his career that Manson made the move to wide receiver. Manson started only one game at quaterback in his career, that being in Syracuse. He was listed as the starter at wide receiver versus Wisconsin and Minnesota at the end of the 2006 season. Manson would collect three total catches for 22 yards.

Brad Rogers took a redshirt his first season on campus. He saw some action at running back in 2010 versus Ball State before making the permanent move to fullback. Rogers has battled health issues but appears to have that in the past and the fullback position locked up for the next two and a half seasons.

Scott Chandler spent his first season at Iowa running fade routes in the redzone. The skinny freshman wide receiver added some weight and made the move to tight end his sophomore year. Chandler went on to earn second team All-Big Ten honors and currently plays tight end in the NFL for the Buffalo Bills.

Jonathan Babineaux started three games as a true freshman at fullback. He would record one rush and one reception, both for four yards. Babineaux would suffer an injury the following season and would make his defensive end debut in 2002. He would eventually move down to the defensive tackle position and currently plays defensive tackle in the NFL for the Atlanta Falcons.

Marvin McNutt began his career at Iowa as a quarterback. He showed flashes of ability in 2008 and finished the season with three pass attempts. McNutt made the move to wide receiver during the 2008 season and had one catch against Indiana. McNutt has since tied Danan Hughes and Tim Dwight as Iowa's All-Time touchdown reception leader. With six, maybe seven, games left on Iowa's schedule McNutt needs 497 yards (83 yds/game) to become Iowa's All-Time leading receiver.

Some other guys that have switched:

Tom Donatell started out as a quarterback. He's spent some time at Iowa as a safety and got the start last week against Northwestern as an OLB.

Jonathan Gimm began his career as a tight end but has since made the move to fullback.

I'm sure I've missed some, who are some others you can recall? Leave a comment and let me know.

Hawkeye Rumor Time | AJ Derby to Linebacker?

Once again, a certain QB is being discussed amongst Hawkeye message board land. This time it's not about a fight or an arrest. For what seems like a rumor that will never go away, AJ Derby switching from quarterback to linebacker is back up for discussion.

On HawkeyeNation, nwiahawks is stating that Derby has changed to linebacker in practice.

Derby moving from QB to LB has been a subject of rumor since his arrival at Iowa. In the summer of 2010 Hawkeye Insider's Rob Howe tweeted that the move was coming. It didn't at that time.

Derby had worked hard enough at quarterback to earn the number two spot on the roster. Derby remained number two until his suspension following his arrest for public intox the October 2nd. Coach Ferentz stated just yesterday, during his weekly press conference, that Derby was "back with us full speed. He did a really nice job the last two weeks. In fact, he was one of the guys running around throwing the ball against our defense, sometimes too good a job, so we'll see."

So, following those comments that makes the timing of this "rumor" a little weird. With the injuries at linebacker it could be an emergency situation. Possibly no more than Mossbruker as the third string quarterback at Penn State. But, it's also possible that the staff, and Derby, has seen enough of true freshman Jake Rudock to know he's not far away from being the true number two guy.

A move shouldn't be too difficult for a guy that has been studying defenses for the last two years. Derby is certainly big enough to play the position. He's 6'4" 230 pounds. If he has enough speed remains to be seen. With Indiana and Minnesota on the schedule the next two weeks it may be the perfect time to experiment. Derby has three and a half years at Iowa to make his mark and linebacker may be a perfect fit. Then again, it's all just a rumor.

Hawkeye Football | Final Thoughts and Observations From Northwestern

First, what a fantastic mid-October night for some football.

Iowa's second play was an interesting bunch formation. Both Derby and Herman with Keenan Davis the outside wide receiver. McNutt was wide on the opposite side.

Coker's first carry was a little trap off the backside. Northwestern was in a 4-3 over and Iowa attacked the backside. It was a nice run by Coker and an nicer block by Herman.

Looks like Iowa is using Woody Orne at the tight end position in their big set. He also had a new number (95).

Kind of a strange call on 3rd and 8 to run Coker to the outside. Iowa was on the 14 yard line and settled for a field goal. Northwestern sent all the linebackers on a blitz and maybe KOK thought running to the opposite side would work? NW's LB's were shifted to the slot WR and sent one LB from the middle and two from the slot WR side.

Iowa's kick coverage is improved from week one. Those frosh, particularly Nico Law, are getting better.

I like that Iowa's DL set the tone on the opening drive. Persa was going to have success moving around but the DL did a good job of getting pressure on the opening drive.

Finally, a swing pass to the slot WR. I think these plays have been missing from Iowa's offense. They don't get a ton of yards but work about as well as a running play. The upside is that you force the defense (especially the linebackers) to run to the sideline. Iowa ran it two plays back-to-back, the second went incomplete. Still, I like this in the offense. Linebackers running back-to-back twenty yard sprints wears down a defense.

A Broderick Binns sighting, by far his best game of the year.

Tom Donatell got smoked on a go route by the back-up quarterback. It was a pretty fine catch though.

Persa isn't even close to being the same runner he was before his injury a year ago.

It was good to see Lowery and Iowa go to nickel. Lowery looked a little rusty and it may still be a work in progress.

Tom Donatell made a nice tackle on a swing pass to NW's RB.

Tanner Miller got a couple of nice blocks from the DL to open up that pick six. He's a player that's really progressed over the last month. Iowa will have to replace Bernstine next year but I think Miller is the FS for the next two years.

Kick coverage, Nico Law again. I hope that's a sign of his future. Three years as Iowa's starting strong safety?

Carl Davis sighting! I think this was the best Davis has shown in his career, for those couple of plays.

On Coker's 25 yard run he dragged that NW defensive back six yards.

Brad Rogers showed some nice hands. He's a huge boost to Iowa's O. When he gets his legs back the Iowa running game will be much better.

Coker had a big hole to his left on second and short and elected to run right into the NW DL. I like that he loves contact but he still needs to improve his vision.

Jonathan Gimm still struggles. Whiffed big time on a block and then was called for a hold.

I thought Scherff played well at left guard when he rotated in with Tobin.

NW started a new corner, Dugaard. I think Keenan Davis only beat him by nine yards on his TD catch. To his defense, the NW safety decided to double team the Iowa TE that hadn't had a target all game. Keenan snuck behind the safety and burned the corner for an easy six.

They didn't show it on TV but after NW's TD coach K met Mike Daniels about halfway on the field and was in his ear all the way to the bench.

Kick coverage not so good on NW's third return. The return came on the left side this time.

It was great seeing Gettis finishing off blocks, it might have been his best game to date.

NW's Dugaard redeemed himself with a pick. Vandy didn't see the zone coverage on the backside.

The coaches wanted a hold on Dunsmore blocking Donatell after a NW first down off the option. It wasn't a hold, it was an own.

If Dominic Alvis was a shade quicker he'd have a chance at All-Big Ten next year.

They finally called a hold against Northwestern. That has to be the first time in five years.

I'm not sure what happened with NW's wide receiver being uncovered. I thought maybe it was a CB blitz but after watching it, it kinda looked like Prater didn't know the WR was even there.

Kevonte Martin-Manley was doing freshman things.

Another thing you didn't see on TV. Ferentz really lit into the Oline on the bench. I'm not saying that's what was the catalyst for the late second half dominance but he chewed some ass. There was a lot of room and space for Coker after that.

Coker ran right behind Orne for that TD. Fiedorowicz also drove his man into the endzone. That capped off a vintage Hawkeye drive.

Still kicking the ball out-of-bounds. C'mon Meyer!

Quinton Alston sighting! I thought the kid played well, still a lot to learn obviously. On an option run he got sucked inside a little and ran into a tough block on the edge. He'll learn to read that better. A play I liked was against the pass. He dropped to the curl zone and as the back crossed his face he called out to Nielsen the back's route. Nielsen was also sitting in the flat zone and came up to make a big hit. Sure the ball was caught and Nielsen made the play but it showed Alston making a nice play recognition and using good communication.

Micah Hyde is just a playmaker. He really stepped up in the fourth quarter.

I just saw Reilly Reiff toss Matt Tobin and Tobin's man to the ground and then take the DE and push him back five yards. He literally blocked three people.

Finally! A flag on Fitzgerald. We've been waiting for that for ever.

And then we see what success running the ball can do. McNutt was open by ten yards on that play action pass. NW stacked the box and the DB got caught looking into the backfield.

Binns forces the fumble and Hawkeye recruit Ryan Ward's brother Patrick just starred at it.

Iowa again went to that bunch formation but tried a WR screen to the backside. The pass was knocked down, the second on the day.

Fiedorowicz got a lot of reps late in the game. Remember he's only a sophomore. Hopefully that light is going on.

I thought McNutt was going to return the first onside kick. He almost broke it.

I'm really not sure why Iowa was in such a hurry to score a touchdown. I thought when Vandy was ruled down at the one that Iowa had four downs to milk some clock if they wanted to. At that point it was a two score game, just at four minutes left. At the very least run the play clock down on first down. Instead they hurried up and ran the play making it a three score game but gave NW four minutes. I'm not saying you lie down but NW was out of timeouts.

Prater got beat, that was right in front of us. It was NW's second teamers too.

Like I said, it was a great night for football. The game was entertaining and the right team won. Now, on to Indiana.

Best of UI Police Arrest Records | Northwestern at Iowa

I was cruising the Hawkeye message boards this morning, looking for "fire Ferentz" posts when I came across this pretty good little thread. At the Hawkeyelounge there is a link to the UI Police Records following the Northwestern at Iowa game Saturday night.

Here is the link and some of the highlights:

stats:

Arrest highlights:
"Johnston, Jared Dee, 30 of Des Moines, IA for Public Intox & Interference w/official acts at Kinnick at 1752 hours. Officer observed Johnston almost fall when entering Kinnick. Officers told him he needed to leave. Johnston told officers they were “fucking crazy” while talking to officers Johnston tried to flee. Johnston refused PBT."

"Hardy, Brenden Edward Darel, 21 of Iowa City for Public Intox at Kinnick at 1704 hours. Hardy was using the statue to support himself. Hardy would not leave when he was informed he was not going to be allowed into Kinnick. Hardy had slurred speech & smelled heavily of alcohol. Hardy blew .238 PBT."

"Cox, Joel Robert, 32 of Urbandale, IA for Public Intox at Kinnick at 1807 hours. Cox was observed giving money to a security guard at Gate C to get into the stadium. Cox had slurred speech, bloodshot, watery eyes & admitted drinking. Cox refused PBT."

"Pieper, Garrett Ian, 25 of Colfax, IA for Public Intox at Kinnck at 1829 hours. Pieper was sitting slumped over. Pieper had slurred speech & smelled of ingested alcohol. Pieper blew .245 PBT."

For those keeping score, the leader, and you couldn't refuse the breath test to win, was Mark Amend's .262 PBT. Ian Piper's .245 PBT just barely edged out Kelly Ford's .244 for second place. That's a lotta booze people, take care of yourselves.
