Hawkeye Basketball Links | Devyn Marble Still Not Practicing

Here's a links post for your hoops fix. Today is the Big Ten basketball media day and some news is trickling out. There will certainly be more tomorrow so you'll get TWO BASKETBALL LINK POSTS IN TWO DAYS! Hooray!

Any-who, the biggest news to come from this morning, when head coach Fran McCaffery spoke to the media, is that Hawkeye sophomore Devyn Marble has yet to return to practice. Marble suffered a concussion after smacking heads the third or fourth practice of the season.

Marble isn't the only Hawkeye a little banged up. According to Fran, via a Scott Dochterman tweet, "White fine, Brommer out a month or 3 weeks; Marble still out with concussion not passing tests."

There were several other tweets from Fran's time at the podium, here are some (make sure to give these cats a follow, if you don't already):

RT @ScottDochterman: Fran on styles of play: prefer to go quicker than half-court league

RT @thebstiles: Fran talking about how he wants to press more this season.

RT @RickBrownDMR: Olesani has been "phenomenally consistent'' in practice at post for the Hawkeyes. Fran doesn't want to play Basabe at the 5.

RT @BTNBrentYarina: #Hawkeyes Bryce Cartwright & Matt Gatens both singled out Eric May as a teammate who's improved. Great news after down soph season.

Hawkeye Football Links | Hawks Look to JUCO for Help for the Defensive Line

Maybe the most interesting piece of news released this week was that the Hawkeye football coaches are looking at a couple of JUCO defensive line prospects in California. Pat Harty writes that Iowa is interested but yet to offer Jake Sheffield and Robert Caldwell from the College of the Desert in Palm Desert.

Jake Sheffield is a former Marine that served two tours in Iraq. He originally gave his verbal to Arizona State but has decided to shop around a little. Here is an interesting read on Sheffield from Arizona Central.

Sheffield is a 6'3 275 pound defensive lineman that is listed as a three star recruit on Rivals.com.

Robert Caldwell is a 6'4 245 pound linebacker that doesn't have a star rating at Rivals but is listed with an offer from New Mexico State. Caldwell has a highlight video on YouTube:

PSD's Twitter Top 25 | A Look at the Key Match-Ups For Week 9

Now that the Twitter Top 25 has been posted we can look ahead to the key match-ups for week nine in college football.

Here we go:

Thursday, October 27, 2011 7:00 PM CST Fox Regional

Rice at #17 Houston
Spread: Houston -27.5

This should be an easy win for the Cougars and Vegas thinks so putting them at almost a four touchdown favorite. I listed this game because Houston at 7-0 has slowly been climbing the rankings. A huge win on prime time could get them that kick they need to get near or in the Top 10.

Friday, October 28, 2011 7:00 PM CST ESPN

BYU at TCU
Spread: TCU -13.5

Both teams have received votes from pollsters this season and currently lurk outside the Top 25 in the "others receiving votes" section. A loss in this game will eliminate one of those teams from pollster's ballots, the other has a chance to again crack the Top 25.

Saturday, October 29, 2011 11:00 AM CST ESPN2

Purdue at #18 Michigan
Spread: Michigan -13.5

Michigan had a bye week but this will be a test to see if the loss to Michigan State still lingers. The Boilermakers have been a team on the uptick this year and could continue a drive to bowl eligibility win a win on the road.

Saturday, October 29, 2011 11:00 AM CST ESPN

#10 Michigan State at #15 Nebraska
Spread: Nebraska -4

It took a miracle in the form of a "Hail Mary" for Sparty to knock off Wisconsin last week. The Cornhuskers had a warm-up with Minnesota. MSU is in the driver seat for the Big Ten's Legends Division but the Cornhuskers could take the lead with a win over the Spartans.

Saturday, October 29, 2011 2:30 PM CST ABC

Illinois at #19 Penn State
Spread: PSU -5

The Illini broke the Top 15 after a 6-0 start but have since slid out of the Top 25 after losing back-to-back weeks. Penn State slow rise in the rankings may have to do with their unsettled quarterback position but the defense has carried the team. Penn State currently sits atop the standings in the Big Ten Leaders Division. This game with Illinois begins a challenging finish for the Lions that will also face Nebraska, Ohio State and Wisconsin to close out the year.

Saturday, October 29, 2011 2:30 PM CST ESPN

#11 Oklahoma at #8 Kansas State
Spread: Oklahoma -13.5

You have to wonder if Kansas State is worthy of the #8 ranking. Oklahoma had their BCS Championship hopes dashed last week in Norman when Texas Tech knocked them from the ranks of the unbeaten. Vegas loves the Sooners to rebound but Kansas State has been a value bet all season.

Saturday, October 29, 2011 2:30 PM CST ABC

Baylor at #4 Oklahoma State
Spread: Okie State -14

Oklahoma State now sits atop the Big 12 standings with Kansas State after in-state rival Oklahoma lost to Texas Tech last week. The Cowboys might be the conference's last shot at the BCS title game unless Kansas State gives Oklahoma its second loss in a row. Okie State will have to slow down Baylor's RG3 first in what will be a for sure shootout.

Saturday, October 29, 2011 7:00 PM CST ESPN

#12 Wisconsin at Ohio State
Spread: Wisky -7

Wisconsin gets a chance to rebound this week, again in front of a prime time national audience. The down side? They have to do it in Columbus. The Buckeyes had a bye week to prepare for the Badgers and surprisingly are still in the hunt for the Leaders Division crown.

Saturday, October 29, 2011 7:00 PM CST ABC

#3 Stanford at #20 USC
Spread: Stanford -7.5

The Trojans would love to play spoiler and end BCS Championship hopes for Stanford. With a weak Pac-12 this is one of the few remaining tough games for the Cardinal. Andrew Luck will have a national audience to showcase his abilities. A big game for him and the Heisman might be all but his.

Hawkeye Football | Freshman Defensive End John Raymon Officially Gone

The University of Iowa has officially announced that freshman John Raymon has left the football team. A little over a week ago, Scout.com's Rob Howe posted this news along with quotes from Raymon.

Raymon told Scout, "Mainly, I need to be closer to home." He also told Scout's Howe, "I'm looking to go to the Big East or ACC," Raymon said. "I'm thinking about WVU, Pitt and N.C. State. Maybe it will be another Big Ten school."

Raymon had been a subject of rumors dating back to August 16th when he posted on his Facebook wall that he wanted to transfer. Entering his first fall camp at Iowa he was a considered a freshman that could compete for playing time along the defensive line. Following the fallout of the Facebook message it was reported that Raymon would stay and try to work things out.

Raymon joins Rodney Coe as the first two deflections from Iowa's 2011 recruiting class. Rodney Coe is currently enrolled and playing football at Iowa Western Community College and reportedly still has interest in joining the Iowa football team after he receives an Associates Degree at IWCC.

Iowa needs all the help they can get along the defensive front seven. Raymon's departure still leaves Iowa's DL with Darian Cooper, Riley McMinn and Melvin Spears from the 2011 class. The saddest thing might be that we never get to see if Raymon gets a shot with Fran McCaffery's basketball squad.

PSD's Twitter Top 25 College Football Poll | Week 8

Here we go, another week, another Top 25. Here is the link to the spreadsheet, and here are the highlights:

  • Clemson was closing in on Boise State and has now leaped them to #5

  • USC, Texas Tech, Georgia, Cincinnati and Southern Miss join the Top 25 from the not-ranked

Others receiving votes:

West Virginia (79), Baylor (47), Texas (47), Auburn (28), Syracuse (17), BYU (11), Georgia Tech (11), TCU (11), Washington (10), Illinois (8), Rutgers (8), Iowa (4), Wake Forest (2)

Hawkeye Links | NCAA Releases Graduation Success Rates

The NCAA released graduation success data today for students entering college in 2004. The Graduation Success Rate (GSR) uses the Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) and then accounts for transfer students, mid-year enrolled and some non-scholarship students. In comparison to the data collected for 2003 the national GSR for all sports increased 3% from 79% to 82%. Men's basketball increased from 66% to 68% while football remained the same at 69%.

The Iowa Men's football program had a reported GSR of 83%, an improvement of 4% over 2003's reported data. That is 14% above the national average. Men's basketball increased 18% from 55% to 73% from 2003 to 2004. That also is now above the national average. How does that compare to the rest of the Big Ten?

Here is the 2004 GSR data for men's football (Big Ten):

Illinois: 76%
Indiana: 66%
Michigan: 71%
Michigan State: 62%
Minnesota: 59%
Northwestern: 94%
Ohio State: 67%
Penn State: 87%
Purdue: 59%
Wisconsin: 66%

Iowa's 83% ranks third behind Northwestern and Penn State.

Now for men's hoops (Big Ten):

Illinois: 100%
Indiana: 47%
Michigan State: 82%
Michigan: 45%
Minnesota: 43%
Northwestern: 80%
Ohio State: 57%
Penn State: 90%
Purdue: 50%
Wisconsin: 50%

Iowa now ranks fifth behind Illinois, Michigan State, Northwestern and Penn State.

And finally, here is Iowa State's men's football and basketball:

Iowa State football: 63% men's basketball: 45%

Hawkeye RUMOR Time | Mike Stoops to Iowa? Wait, What?!?

If you are just tuning in there is a rumor circulating this morning that began as a post on Hawkeye Report.

A poster that goes by the anonymous name "zeko" claims that Mike Stoops will be Iowa's new defensive coordinator and that Norm Parker will serve as a consultant.

Sounds unbelievable right?

So why give blog space to a such an unbelievable rumor? Well, if you recall just last week, rumors began on message boards that AJ Derby was making a move to linebacker. That rumor remained unconfirmed by the media until Derby stepped on the field for warm-ups at Saturday's game against Indiana.

Sometimes these things turn out to be true. But, I have a hard time believing this one. The Derby rumor can come from one of the many friends and classmates he has on campus. I highly doubt Norm Parker or Gary Barta are hanging over their backyard fence jawing with "Joe the neighbor" about Iowa's coaching situation. In other words, how inside would "zeko" have to be to get a hold of this information.

Now, if the Stoops to Iowa rumor was for 2012 I could buy it. Why would Ferentz bring someone in mid-season to run the defense. Mike Stoops wouldn't know a whole lot about the players or opponents he's coaching or coaching against.

The NCAA limits schools to nine coaches for football. They are also allowed two graduate assistants. The NCAA only allows "consultants" if they are counted under the 11 coaches cap allowed by the NCAA. Pete Carroll got in some hot water with the NCAA back in 2009 when he had several "consultants" around the USC program. So, if Stoops were to join the Iowa coaching staff Parker, or someone, would need to go.

Jon Miller pointed out to me via Twitter, "I think Kirk would hire from within. Would be shocked if he didn't." And that makes the most sense. Again, why bring in a guy that hasn't been around these players when you have coaches that work with them every day?

Ferentz is about to hold his weekly press conference. We'll see if he gets a question relating to this rumor. We'll also see if he holds back his laughter. I'll post an update if one becomes available.

Hawkeye Football | Wayback Machine | The Origin of Floyd of Rosedale

It's time to get that pig back. But first, do you know the history of Floyd? There was a story published on Minnesota Public Radio by Mark Steil in 2005 that is an excellent summary.

I'll quote the opening paragraphs, hopefully you'll give the article a read. Remember, this was published in 2005.

"This Saturday is the 70th anniversary of the creation of one of college football's most famous trophies. Floyd of Rosedale goes each November to the winner of the Minnesota-Iowa game. On one level, the bronze pig is just another collegiate prize. But few people know it had its origins in a 1934 game with racial overtones.

It was a time of discrimination. African Americans were banned from the NFL. The University of Minnesota enrolled blacks but enforced segregationist policies. The key player behind the Floyd trophy was an African American who refused to yield to discrimination. "

Best of CycloneFanatic | Paul Rhoads Goes Bananas

And if you were wondering what Cyclone Fanatic thought about this, here is a thread for your enjoyment.

The original thread question:

Would you donate to a Coach Rhoads fine?
Some highlights:
Clones21 says:
"I'd put in a couple dollars. It'd be funny to see him just go up and spit in the refs face."

Rogue52 says:

"To the ******* comparing Rhoads to Pelini, you have no idea what working the officials is about. Maybe we should just rehire McCarney and go back to bending over and taking it from Big XII officials on a daily basis."

Again, from Rogue52:

"If you personally don't like Rhoads' response on the field to a horrible call, do not celebrate the man when he responds emotionally with his team in positive situations. You either get an emotional coach or you get Kirk Ferentz. Both have their positives and negatives. You take the good with the bad."

And believe me, there is much more, but you'll have to head over there and read it for yourself.

EDIT TO ADD THIS OMG HILARIOUS PIECE OF ART FROM HAWKEYE REPORT:

H/T to the Rock88

Best of UI Police Arrest Records | Indiana at Iowa

Here we go, Hawkeye Homecoming! It was an early game (11:00 am) so I don't expect this week to live up to last week's night game versus Northwestern.

And this week's PBT winner is....

"Bruns, Michael Robert, 41 of Cedar Rapids, IA for Public Intox at Emerald/Melrose at 1610 hours. Bruns was walking & yelling obscenities at officers who were working at a traffic check point location. Bruns blew .252 PBT."
